Exhaust system light and revving when idle
«
on:

Me again.
Today my Exhaust System light came on and when idling the engine, quite constantly, revs up and down slowly (up to about 1500). DO you think this is the age old PCV valve issue?
Thanks,
C

Could be a few possibilities so you need to get the car scanned to pin point the fault code.

Going in this evening. If either, do you think it will be an expensive fix?

IMO it doesn't sound like the TB but if it is, the new part alone from VW is over £400.

Dealers will want a body part for the TB... it's more likely to be the PCV, but mine wasn't with the same symptoms; I changed out the TB and all was good.

Dealer just called. £200
Was more but got discount due to FSH. They reckon 2 hours labour. Sound about right?
Thanks folks. All I can do now is wait.
Oh and just another thing while I think about it. Was there a recall on the PCV valve? Was reading this thread...

What is it they are doing?
If it's PCV, then that's very expensive. It's an easy DIY mate, part is about £35
It's never the TB at that price... as the part alone is more than £200 (brand new at least).

That was my initial thought.
Originally, all in, it was going to cost £239
Diagnostic cost £50!!!
So considering I'm getting it for £200 and if my math is right if I subtract the £35 part plus the diagnostic that leaves £154, divided by 2 for 2 hours labour (£77 per hour).
I live in NI and don't know anyone local to do a diagnostic :-(
I will mention the PCV valve recall anyway to see what they say as mine is a 2007 GTI and there is no log of the original PCV being changed. Also found this.

Yeah try them on the recall, print it out if you can... if that doesn't work, point out that it most certainly isn't a 2 hour job, unless they've got a monkey doing it.

So I had to pay the £200. No notes of recall or anything else relating to PCV failure. I have to say that the car is running great. I am not sure whether that is because I have been driving my wife's 2003 Renault clio for the past 2 days though :-)
