External GPS sharkfins query
« on: September 09, 2013, 10:21:45 pm »
Just about ready to go with the installation of my RNS510 (big thanks to Eddie-NL and demon666 for hooking me up with some bits).

Made a last minute decision that I would prefer the shark-fin roof mount GPS rather than going with the puck under the dash (I did this on a previous install and it was not great, and don't want it on the dash itself).

However, after doing the usual searches on here, am now totally lost.

Am I right in thinking that the OEM sharkfin does not have an aerial for the FM radio on the headunit?  If so, bearing in mind I currently have the beesting on the roof, what are the options - don't want the combined fin/sting mount as this looks pony imho.

Also read that all Mk5s additionally have an aerial in the heated rear screen - if so, could this be wired up instead of the beesting for the radio, and just use the fin for the GPS?

Need to give pretty precise info to the garage doing the installation as I am away while it is being done, so am not around if they run into issues ...

All help welcomed  :happy2:

Get back in touch with Ed he's supplied me with a fin and all you need  - Ariel complete with extention lead (GPS) and polo short whip at a very fair price.

Has FM - GPS & GMS plugs

Not that bad - 22mm crow foot and two pieces of 4" X 8" long guttering is the answer - under 1 hour job!

From what I remember if yours has an arial now, your don't have one in the rear screen so have to keep the bee sting!

Correct me if I'm wrong, all mine have been built in and I've just run my GPS antenna under my dash with no problems.

puck under the dash works just fine on mine.  i also fitted an OEM shark fin but just for vanity.. all it does is the radio.

Yeah ended up keeping the beesting and the puck is under the dash.

Nav seems to work fine so all is good  :happy2:

I found the puck no use for London - in general the puck seemed fine.
