Not in the Golf now but an A4 avant and wondering which type of rack to go for, boot or roof mounted so wanted peoples opinions form their experience, which is best, pro's con's etc???? Any recommendations too that wont cost an arm and a leg. Only got one bike to carry at the moment but cant see it being more than 3 in the future.

Roof every time.  I can get four (two adults' + two kids') bikes on my wife's Passat estate.  The boot stays accessible, nothing gets scratched.  I've got Thule bars with Halfords racks.  I pounced when Halfords had a sale on - their stuff is very similar to the Thule kit and it's certainly stood up well to our abuse.  The racks regularly go on offer for half price.

Shadow blue DSG 5 door with leather, sunroof, 18" Monzas, MFSW.
Full list of mods:  Seat inserts and a VW bottle opener.  Each worth 20bhp.

Wouldn't put anything on the hatch if I cared about the car or the bikes. For ease of loading / efficiency I'd always opt for a towbar rack. I have used a Buzzrack to good effect the past couple of years to carry heavy downhill bikes to the Alps and back.

I used audi bars and Thule pro ride 591 to great effect on my A4 Avant.

I've recently sold the car so the bars are available if your interested
