Tyre Monitor - Possible Group Buy?....
« on: August 31, 2009, 11:36:34 am »
....

I'm in the process of arranging a possible Group Buy on this bit of kit and am awaiting prices according to quantities.

If there is enough interest I'll arrange it so that a formal list is started in the forum's Group Buy area and that subsequently each person pays the supplier (not me) directly - Like the BSH CatchCan GB.

It's portable and is smaller than the size of a flattened packet of 20 fags and wirelessly connects to substitute tyre valves to then display pressures and also tyre temperatures - Possibly very useful to the trackies amongst us. The valves need to be installed by a tyre fitter and replaced when your tyres are - New valves cost £3.98 each inc vat but their batteries last about 7 years.

Usual kit price is £179 inc vat - Discount will be according to final interest.

It has been reviewed favourably by AutoExpress and also The Gadget Show and I bet if Suzi Perry promises to deliver it personally the GB quantity will go through the roof!

Slap Suzi's arse Click Suzi's pic for more info : -

^ But she promised me it was wireless!! ^

EDIT: (2 Sept 09)

5-9 units = £155 each inc vat and shipping within UK

10+ units = £145 each inc vat and shipping within UK

I've just been having a phone chat with Hurdy and he thinks that our 'wheelman' member may be able to get good prices for a GB - Is that pw-motorsport? We'll see who can give us the best discount deal.

First stage is to see the extent of interest here.

Hurdy has also seen one and thinks they are good. [He also wants to keep slapping Suzi's arse!]

I'd seriously think about this. Would save me having to check the tyre pressures manually. Plus my rims need refurbing and tyres need replacing soon.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

@ SteveP - Thanks - I'll try and find out what he thinks of it etc :happy2:

@ stealth - Methinks one could use it at the air top-up places too - More reliable than their data I expect.

Our GTI's already have an onboard tyre monitor but it only tells you you've lost a certain amount of pressure and not how much or which tyre. It's only designed as a safety measure against a slow puncture while driving.

Just so you know, the TPMS on the GTI is not an "active" pressure based system. It measures the rolling radius of the wheel through the use of the ABS sensors. This renders it very inaccurate, and slow to respond. As a tyre pressure warning system goes, it's not very effective.
US-issue GTIs get an active TPMS system with a sensor in each wheel; however, the cost to retrofit it in a EU-spec Mk5 is around US$1000, at least when I investigated this a couple of years ago.

This seems like a highly cost-effective and neat way of getting an active TPMS system working. Two things I'd like to know about this though: 1) What wireless protocol does it use? I'd be money it's ZigBee, but I'm not sure; other things could interfere with your phone or bluetooth or whatever and 2) What resolution is the sensor?

....Haven't you got something better to do such as resurrecting ancient Soviet military hardware?

Just joking! But I don't know the answers to your questions - If no-one else posts answers I can try and find out tomorrow.

Apparently, from 2012 all NEW VEHICLES sold in the UK will be fitted with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System when they leave the factory.

But I wonder if they'll be any better (more accurate) than the system VW already have in our GTI's. And why wait until 2012 FFS!?

EU law, same with the DRLs.
They will be much more accurate (both in terms of response and resolution) that the passive TPMS that we have as it will be an active system using in-wheel sensors.

thats an awful lot of money vs buying a gauge and checking it regularly.

I know they sponsor the Time Attack series and some of the racers are using it.

But for daily driving...is it really VFM?

i look at my tyres every day before i set off for work...just a quick glance for bulges and deflation.

then check the pressure every other week.
