Engine strengthening mods for k04?
« on: September 28, 2013, 09:48:44 am »
So I've finally decided to k04 my beast but before I do, can anyone recommend engine internal work to strengthen the engine and dsg?

Not looking for massive cost but arp rod bolts and that sort of thing just to help make sure I don't over stress the power train...

What do you reckon?

Cheers

It's generally pistons and rods that fail, but unless your going for WMI or a bigger turbo in future and an aggressive map, then save your pennies as the K03 engine can take a K04's power all day long :happy2:

The DSG is good for 450-500+ BHP so don't worry about that. An LSD would help put the power down though

Interested in this also. What sort of power is safe for the standard GTI engine with K04 bolted on?

Its not the power thats the problem its the torque.
The K03 engine can easily take the k04 as long as the mapping takes the torque in to consideration or you could bend a rod.

All mainstream tuners (Revo, APR etc) will provide a map that's safe for your internals.

James bolted a K04 and WMI onto his and had Nick @ R-Tech push the envelope with tuning it (at James request).

James did 8k HARD miles of 400bhp before a piston ring failed.

A 330-350bhp K04 conversion is perfectly safe providing you keep up with the maintenance  :happy2:

Don't wanna be a show stopper but my stock engine failed with 330 bhp. Now have Golf R engine and hopefully will last veery long!

Having said that as peeps were saying above plenty of cars out there with 340ish bhp on stock engine without issue. Bear in mind that the higher the power for a given engine the more prone to failure it is!
