MK5 Hexagonal Grill - How to clean!?!
« on: September 09, 2013, 06:41:56 pm »
Hi Guys

I've got some great high level cleaning tips of the web site, and I'm using some products I'd never even heard of which have resulted in the golf looking super!  :pomppomp: :jumpmove:

However, one area that I think lets my detailing down (apart from laziness and time!), is the dreaded, tricky and finicky front grill.  I don't have the time or patience for spending hours poking something in each nook and cranny to clean the thing, so how do I return it to it's former black rather than grey status to really finish the front end off?

Ooooo, also, how do I get rid of blood splats from moths and other flying things?!

Cheers!

LOL, I've heard of some peeps taking the whole thing off (pretty easy, just a couple of torx and latches) and whacking it in the dishwasher... not tried it myself.

I used a toothbrush, but i had nothing to do all day, then went around it with a toothbrush with back to black. took 45 minutes : (

Just use some APC at 1:10 and a detailing brush to agitate and rinse.

I used to take mine off, couple of coats of back to black and it looked great and in 12 months hadn't started to turn grey again. Bolts at the bottom can be a bit fiddly though IIRC and I nearly lost them into the sump guard a couple of times. Have a long magnetic pointer handy!

I also removed mine recently, sat in doors and watched a film whilst I used some Auto Finesse Revive and a detailing brush  :happy2:

Mine's discoloured a funny hazy bluey-grey colour. Think I might try the heatgun treatment on it.  :rolleye:

Best way I have found to clean is to use the smallest brush from the wheel woolie set. Perfect size for the Mk5 honeycomb.

Finish with a coating of Meguiars Hyper dressing and that should do you for a long time!
