Are 17's A LOT more comfortable than 18's?
« on: September 14, 2013, 07:01:06 pm »
I've had 8x 18' Monzas pretty much since I've had the car, one set winter one summer.  I've never driven a Mk5 GTI with 17's and fancy grabbing a set for this years winter boots, just to try.... but is it worth it in terms of comfort?  Is there a BIG difference?  :popcornsoda:

Sure I wrote this in the other thread...but I noticed it last year with A6 17" rims and now this year with Monza's, less bumpy and more MPG than 18" Pescara's.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

You did, it sparked my interest again really :happy2:  There's a place on Fleabay that do exchanges, so might not cost too much to do a swap.

I wouldn't say there is a big enough difference to swap, just something I observed as I could only get 17s in a hurry last year.

It also makes my ED30 look pants with the winters on  :sad1:

I have a set of 17" Monza's for winters (mainly because winters are cheaper in 17") and yes, I do notice an improvement in comfort! Not massive, but certainly noticeable when you put the 18's back on

Remember that winters are much softer in compound so comparing 17's to 18's with winter and summer tyres respectively may not be accurate.  :happy2:

Gone but not forgotten :-)

I had 2 years in a 17" shod GTI and am coming up to a year in one with 18"s on it and I can safely say 17"s are more comfortable than 18s , not sure if its a LOT but its surely noticeable...as ever I think the 18"s are worth the pain , for the looks.

All good advice, cheers guys - think I'll just keep with the 18's, the rubber doesn't seem massively more than the 17 atm. :happy2:

Kind of... but i just like the look of them, and I can park it and not worry about curbing them
