Mk7 Golf GTi is only 17mm wider. In answer to the OP I am considering changing my mk5 GTi for the mk7 GTi, after test driving I am very impressed.

In my garage the MKVI Golf R has 10mm of space at one side between the mirror and the wall and then when I open the driver's door to get out there is 10mm space between the wall and the door on the first notch. 17mm extra would make it impossibly tight and then the MKVII doors are slightly longer, so that means zero space to work with.

Golf R gone.

Hard question to answer that one , I wouldnt mind a Mk6 R , or an Ed35 next , not sure I would go for a plain Mk6 GTI , Mk7? not sure , its a tad large to my eyes , maybe though.
X2
Although when the mark6 came out i didn't like it at all but it's grown on me so i expect the same to happen with the mark 7

I do like the Mk7 , its more practical for me though , I can hardly open the door of my Mk5 in my garage , I would have to try a Mk7 3 door to see if I could physically get out of it inside my garage - I wouldnt have a nice car where I live if it didnt fit in my lock up due to chavs , and scum bairns that think nowt of booting footballs off your car etc.... If golfs keep getting wider every model change I might have to move down to the Polo!

When you have owned a MK 1 - Mk  5 - 7 Golfs are huge in comparison - Can't find a photo yet !

I like the MK6 GTI and R, but the 7 just doesn't appeal to me.

When I hit the high high miles, i'll probably end up putting a new engine in. I still think the MK5s are the best, but if a MK2 running 300bhp was to come up, i'd have it in a second!

Had a mk3 gti before my mk5 gti. wanted an mk5 r32, but my budget didn't stretch to one at the time. i've always wanted a 4wd car, so maybe a mk6 r. but then a r36 passat estate appeals to me.

who knows, tastes change. we'll see in 3/4 years

When the time comes its going to be something like an audi s4 avant or a 911 or maybe a landy disco just depends on my needs for the car if its just a toy I do fancy an old 911 or a 911 turbo of some form. I don't drive my ed30 much these days after 90k of driving I have another daily to kick about in

Why sell? I'm keeping mine...but I do like the next R so I likely will add it to the garage.

It is actually a 1960 and the pic is in '67...it did have the upright headlamps behind slanted lenses...

That's awesome...My dad loves them all. I remember he had a black, small window, beetle before this red one. Then two more before I was able to buy a '71 from him. He got a '75 rabbit/golf, then I found a '61 Westfalia camper bus <that one I shouldn't have let get away ;|
