Stuck CDs
« on: September 15, 2013, 01:09:22 pm »
Afternoon,

I fitted a new stereo the other day but I forgot to take all my cds out of the old stereo before removing  :stupid:  Its a rcd500, is there any way I can get all the cds out of it without the stereo being in the car?

I dont want to rip the dash apart again so I tried hooking the stereo up to a car battery charger with a + and a - but the stereo didnt light up.

Any ideas?

I have adapted an old PC PSU to have 12v and ground outputs, I can externally start a stereo using a quadlock loom and crocodile clips - where did you get the 12v and did you ground the stereo at the same time?
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I have an old pc I could try that with, but whats a quadlock loom? I just used the red and black clips of the batt charger onto the earth pin on the stereo and the live. Thought it was worth a try. To connect to the stereo pins I used very narrow female crip spade connectors.

Quadlock is the square plug on a mk5 stereo, but you don't need it if you have spades.

All I can think of is you may have connected to the wrong pins, or your booster isn't giving a consistent 12v?

You could always use the cigarette plug in the car somehow if it is just to spit out discs.

Maybe I used the wrong pins? For the negative I used the stereo pin with the earth symbol and for the positive I used the pin marked +UB. The other pins are TEL MUTE, SAFE, CAN/L and CAN/H. These are on an rcd500.

its probably easier to either 'write off' the CD's or take the dash apart, as trying to get it powered up without using a car could be asking for trouble ie you put too much power through it and knacker it

I had wondered if I might damage it or maybe needed the gateway box connected to the stereo to make is work properly.

The dash may be coming off again at the weekend  :sad1:

Just for reference, I tried again yesterday as I had my PSU out and the stereo definitely booted up with just a 12v and gnd via croc clips.
It'll be down to having a stable power supply I suppose.
