Comfortably Lowering Mk5 GTi
« on: September 18, 2013, 09:24:15 am »
Hi Guys,

Id like to lower my GTi to for looks mainly but obviously i want to keep the handling similar or better. I really like how the car rides and its really comfortable, how can i go about lowering the car and keeping the ride quality? Spring or coilovers? If springs do i needs shocks aswell? Id be looking to go around 40mm lower i think.

Also how much would it be roughly to get fitted and will this include realignment of the wheels, are there any issues i might face with lowering the car such as needing different droplinks or similar.

Thanks for any help.

AP do some 20mm lowering springs, which are pretty much the same as the early -20mm VWR springs (though the new VWR springs seem to be made by eibach).

Supposedly ride very well too.

Id like to go lower than 20mm, so the wheels just sit in the arches

I had H&R springs on the ed30 from the APS groupbuy.. Spot on with the lowering & improved the handling, match them with a set of arbs & u have a winner..

I put the Bilstein B12 kit on mine (-30mm) and it's very comfy, improves the handling a lot

 BUT

If you want your tyres anyway near your arch, you need to get coil overs......Simples! :jumpmove:

Thanks for all the replies, am I right in saying that any coilovers are going to make the ride much more harsh?

They can be stiffer but I would not say coilovers are harsh.
I did 20k+ a year in my old TDI and never once got out of a long journey feeling worn out.
My disabled mother who drives a 2004 Rav 4 said mine was more comfortable..

I ran -35mm H&R springs for 12 months on my GTI. No rubbing at all, unless 5 adults in the car over only the steepest speed bumps, and TBH it was only a gently scrape on the under-tray.

Ride quality was perfect, a little harder than stock, but IMHO exactly how the GTI should ride from the factory

Interested in the H&R springs but have also found Eibach Sportline which ive seen people say that they lower the car more, is this true? has anyone got any pictures with these springs fitted or experience with them. Im more interested in springs than coilovers mainly due to price and not wanting the car "Slammed"
