Retrofits, best places to do them or DIY?
« on: September 19, 2013, 05:07:07 pm »
Hi guys I'm looking to get the following retrofitted to my ed30:

RNS 510,
MFSW Buttons,
Maybe Cruise control.

Where's the best place to get these from?

Vw quoted me these prices for the bits with car and fitting; £2,353.00 for RNS 510, £200 for MFSW buttons and £275 for cruise control.

I obviously don't want to pay this much as its crazy! Is there anywhere local to where I live (Stourbridge/Birmingham) where I can get these fitted for a better price? Or can you do any of these yourself, I think id need the canbus gateway for the rns510 as my ed30 is a 2007 model, how easy are they to fit etc? Any advice?

Thanks

If you're confident with the spanners then DIY otherwise go to Eddie_NL. He is based in East Anglia (and worth the visit) but is ocassionally out and about.

Go see Eddie NL can't fault his work but it would be a bit if a trek. There are others around that way who can do it but can't think of any off the top of my head. Also you will pay at least have of what VW have quoted

All of these things are easy to do physically, compiling the right hardware is key here as there will be supporting parts required (steering wheel modules, CAN gateway possibly, looms etc). You need VCDS too for it.

Everyone says Eddie-NL for good reason, he'll keep you right.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

If I fit the rns510 can VW then code it up properly etc? What do you think of these guys they will come to my work place to do it:
http://www.hazzydayz.com/genuine-vw-rns-510-sat-navdvd-player-supply--fit-773-p.asp

Not sure what to do how easy is it fitting the system? Is it straight forward unplug the plug the new one back in?

Also would it work through the MFSW, volume etc?

Is there anyone local able to Vagcom it etc?

Sorry about all the questions just need to be sure before I do anything!

Thanks

^^^^ A touch expensive!

I'd PM Eddie-NL, a member on here who offers a retro fitting service. Give him this list and ask him if he can help you out. He's not a million miles from you and well worth the trip.

The RNS units are on here (in the For Sale section) a fair bit, look for the Version C and above (the LED screen ones), they sell for around £400+ depending on the Version. Use that as a price guide and look on eBay too, make sure it comes with its security code. You'll also need a GPS antenna and FAKRA antenna adapter, cost peanuts on eBay.

One in the For Sale section (with Gateway). Nowt to do with me......

Cruise control stalks go for around £50+ on eBay. Ed supplies these and also supplies and fits these for less than £100. Ed can also supply and fit a new Can Gateway if ones needed.

Ed.....

If your cars a DSG then MFSW buttons are an easy add on, if its a manual then it can't be done.

Fitting of all this lot is straight forward (if you know what your doing). Personally I leave these thing to the experts, there's a few on here luckily enough.

It can be done.. they just either don't do anything or you can wire them up to do other things... like cruise control.

Think he means you can't add MF buttons to a manual wheel, whereas you can with a DSG wheel (it has a cavity to take buttons).

^^^^ Cheers, thats what i was trying to say.  :happy2:

Theres no room behind the plastic blank plates where the buttons would go. Its all there on DSG wheels whether it has buttons or not but not on a non MFSW steering wheel in a manual car.

Eddie, Eddie, Eddie.
Have dealt with Ed twice and it's well worth the 300 mile round trip.

Oooooh and Stourbridge! That's the dealership mine came from.

Eddie is very good
However things like stereos just fit yourself it's a pile of pee.
Honestly save yourself the money and learn at the same time!
Eddie is a very good guy I've used him many times and out of my alliegience to him I'd probably just pay him to do anything more than a cruise control retrofit or a radio swap but yeah.. at least try things yourself. Else how would you learn?  :happy2:

I mean don't even consider paying VW £2300 you can buy the units for £400 used .
