I went from 17s to 18s and didn't notice much difference. Even dropping down to 16s is only marginally more comfortable over the bumps. I think its just hard suspension.

Kind of... but i just like the look of them, and I can park it and not worry about curbing them

I can undersatnd that, esp. with a bit of a slam and 345 under there.  Wish I hadn't sold my R32's now, was going to buy a BBk but didn't get round to it... still have the standard 312's.. which are pretty lame really.

The more sidewall you have the more comfortable the ride.

17's should have a higher profile than 18's as the idea is to have the same rolling radius when you chnage wheels ie 225/40/18 to 225/45/17

Certainly quieter , 18's sound like all wheel bearings are knackered, when I put 17's back on for winter it is sooooo much smoother

Remember tyre choice is a big factor too. 18s on quality tyres will ride better than 17s on budget.

personally i think 17's look pretty average, 18's set it off so much nicer.

I didn't like 17s on my GTI but I liked them on my Pirelli oddly enough. I think the xenons and smoked lights, and body kit worked better with the understated wheels. But I'm into a bit of a sleeper look at the moment.
