Thats it, MASSIVE premium for less power to weight and transmission losses

Just find it all a bit strange

Local guy to me traded his ED30 for an R and immediately had to chip it to feel some performance gains. He is a bit MEH about it. Think he likes having a newer car but not at a 15k swap...

Well on paper it is the most capable Golf.

Running higher power without some of the downsides of FWD is a positive but they are pricey for the privelage of Haldex, some of this is down to numbers sold and relative rarity.

In some respects the extra weight is a hindrance in others the additional traction is an advantage.

If both cars were similarly priced on the used market which one would most people choose I wonder?

I would buy an R based on how it looks, and on its relative rarity.

I agree, not many on the road and looks amazing in rising blue. It did feel a bit flat to drive, I think a stage 1 map is definitely needed to liven it up. :driver:

I have a mint mk2 1.8t golf a mint black  mk4 gti anni and a steel gray Edition 30 , but don't like the mk6 at all sorry guys they seem to have lost their way I think.

Looks like an Edition 35 owner has seen the light ....and is looking a part exchange

That Ed35 seems too cheap considering the age and mileage.

On the subject of the "R" and value for money over an Ed30 etc. . . On the thread Golf R or S3, i said i'd go S3 as its basically the same car (dynamically) for £10-12k less (used).

As much as I love the "R", its the sort of purchase you make with your heart rather than your head when there are other cars out there that are pretty much as good for a lot less £.

I did consider an 'R' when looking for a replacement to my ed30 as I think they look great and never having had a Haldex equipped car I fancied one for novelty value alone tbh, I got cold feet after test driving one and talking to a friend running an S3 though due to a marked decrease in mpg over my ed30, and as a daily driver doing 22k a year a big jump in running costs would have took the shine off the R for me personally..
My mind was fully made up when I realised for my budget I could either get a 3 year old (on average 30-40K miles) R or a much newer in my case 7 month old 6k miles ed35 for the same money, no brainier tbh
