170tdi or tfsi for girlfriend
« on: September 23, 2013, 01:29:24 pm »
Ok so the wench is looking at getting a new car soon but were a bit stuck. It wont be a golf, it will be a leon, shes not a fan of the styling on the golf so ive pushed her towards a leon as there basically the same car. It will be the fr model so either the tdi170 or the tfsi. There seems to be a lot more choice on the tdi's and better specced ones out there for the money but she only does short journeys, literally 2 miles to work each way and thats about it. would this absoloutly rule the tdi out? is it just the dpf that blocks up? if i was to get this removed and mapped out would these short journeys be fine then? thanks

I thought you asked '170tdi or tfsi or girlfriend' as the answer would definitely be TFSI!

The 170 is a terrible car for short journeys, it has a DPF and a diesel is not that economical on short trips (more than a petrol granted).
Guess it depends if she wants miles to the gallon, or smiles to the gallon?
Also, whereas the Leon shares many part numbers with the mk5, it has poor visibility and not that good an interior. Before anyone shoots me down I have an Altea and my bro in law has a mk2 Cupra.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

The 2 cars are for different needs
You can get 55mpg in the TDI 170 and maybe 42 max from the TFSI.
Wherea s you can get 55mpg easily in the TDI it's a lot harder from to get the MPG in the petrol.

Petrol for a lot of short journeys and TDI for a lot of longer ones.. easy.

That being said 2 miles to and from work.. get a bike!!!!!!!  :booty:

Only one answer with short journeys forget diesels with dpf or your going to be faced with ongoing issues I had an a4 tdi and got rid for the same reasons

I had a thread opened a few weeks ago weather to get a 170 or 140. Final conclusion was to get a gti.

Petrol all day, and a bike for the nice days; 2 miles really is nothing on a bike. :happy2:

The money you would spend removing the DPF and mapping equates to a reasonable amount of petrol...especially on a 2 mile journey which means fuel costs aren't really that much of an issue.

You won't see claimed MPG figures on either car as the engine won't be warm on those journeys.

My 2 mile commute to work I'm lucky to see 20mpg.
On my old TDI (with a HUGE turbo) saw at least 45 over the same route.

The economy differences are less on longer journeys, I can get 37-40mpg on the GTI pretty consistently. The TDI with the turbo was much less consistent due to the mapping and could go from 45 to 65.

looks like petrol then  :happy2: i was swaying that way anyway because i know naff all about deisels and i know the tfsi is a good motor and i know my way around it now. Im just trying to open options really, there isnt much choice for under £7000 for tfsi but there are a lot more tdi's in that price range and they seem much better equipped. Not fussed about fuel economy because it all works out roughly the same in the end anyway unless your obviously travelling about 200 miles a day then deisel is better. Ive been in a few leons and they seem on par build quality wise as the golf, there not to my taste though. Just happy she will be getting rid of her megane, tooo many things going wrong with it. Not sure if its just the ones im looking at but the tdi's look much nicer and sportier with better wheels etc

Buy a 1.9 TDI.
Map it for £250 and fit an EGR delete.
Happily will chug around town for years to come.

You can buy them for £4k these days.

What about an R32?

Not quite sure she will be able to handle the immense power  besides she cant have a faster car than me  :P

Haha, no in serious i absoloutly love r32's but would be too expensive to run, its the tax thats the killer, i might look out for a 1.9 for her then and with the money left over could mod it up a bit to look nice

I bought a new FR with the PD170 engine in 2008 and in the winter on a 4 mile journey to work the temp gauge would barely get out of the blue. I'd buy petrol without hesitation. The DPF's were a major issue back then, not sure what the situation is with the newer CR170 engine. Many engine mappers won't touch them but there are a few that will. Custom code offered a DPF delete and map package for the PD170.

What about a Polo with the 1.4tsi twin charged motor?

Gone but not forgotten :-)
