RCD/RNS 510 worth it
« on: September 16, 2013, 09:57:42 pm »
Looking to upgrade my RCD300 - the sound is terrible!

Are the RCD/RNS 510 systems worth the price, sound wise? Or would i be better going aftermarket?

Is the only difference between the RCD & RNS 510 the fact that the latter has sat nav? I don't need nav, so if the power output is the same i'd just go for the RCD.

I've a RCD510 with an OEM Bluetooth fitted to it and it all works a treat. Get a decent SD card and you can play hundreds of albums at the touch of a button. All works via the Highline display/MFSW once coded.

Add a Mk6 climatronic unit and you'll be able to display your heated seat setting on the Headunit too!

RCD510 with Mk6 Climatronic unit. Looks like this on a Mk5/Mi6 when installed. Ignore the writting.....

so what do we need if we are swopping a RCD300 for RNS510?
Is it a direct swop?
I'm probably going to need a shark fin aerial as i don't have an aerial at all!

Depends what year your car is? I think if its a pre 07 car you will need to buy a new gateway and have it coded to your car otherwise you will suffer the battery drain issue.

Other than that they slot in the hole so to speak!

You will also need an adapter for the aerial connections or install a new aerial (Iv just put a DAB one on mine) - speak to DAB on wheels. very helpful and informative.

Its got the gps antenna,  and the fakra adapter too for the radio. All plug and play. No need to worry about canbus as the firmware ive just put on doesn't drain the battery.

I recently got an RCD510, with unlock code and FAKRA adapter for £150. It's the best mod I've done to the car so far, I love it

I did require a canbus from Eddie_NL, for my 56 plate car.
It cost £75, and came the next day.
Works perfectly, and I'd seriously reccomend an RCD510.. Although the RNS looks even better if it's in your budget :happy2:
