Would defo be worth while grabbing a seal kit from Brakes International and purchasing some new slide bushes from TPS from a Mk4 Golf R32, the Mk4 ones are the same except theyve got a plastic insert inside the rubber which stiffens them up a bit.

New seal kit, New Bushes, New Paint - good to go 

Like me, the R setup is big, heavy and not very sophisticated but it's a grafter and gets the job done in the end
