Mirror Puddle Light ?
« on: September 27, 2013, 11:02:53 pm »
Hi guys i was wondering. My Wing Mirrors are electric but dont have the puddle lights under them? Is it possible to buy these LED's and wire them to the interior light so when i unlock the car they will come on?

Kind Regards

Brad

Electrically they are easy to install. Most door controllers have outputs for them. They just need to be wired to the correct pin and coded in. :happy2:

Mechanically though is a whole different kettle of fish. The folding mirrors are a slightly different shape to accommodate the light and the motor. These are designed as a direct replacement for the OEM bulb unit.

I went for a row of 4 bright LED's in each mirror and wired them into the door controllers:

Apparently I didn't get round to putting the pictures of it completed on photobucket, must try harder!  :sad1:

That looks like a pretty good how-to but you have to be pretty patient and good with a dremel. Yes I did code them in myself.

Be careful though, the ebay listing units that you stated in your original post are different to the ones in the how-to. The ebay ones are a direct replacement for the OEM ones.
They fit to the mount opposed to the bottom of the mirror:

I totally stole this photo (www.myturbodiesel.com):

Yep, push the mirror forward and it reveals a screw, undo it and you're in

I have no idea for a retrofit mate, mine had puddle light filaments as standard. Think joedarka added bulbs to standard mirrors?

There isnt, you have to drill / dremel it yourself. I dremel'd my rear bumper for my RVC, as long as you take your time and keep checking, its a doddle!

Or you could do what I have done and buy new L/R mirror units with the puddle lights in, fit them, replace the standard bulbs for the LED's suggested and connect/code them up to your current door modules. Just make sure that the door modules you do have will support puddle lights and you're onto a winner.
I started my little project thinking that I would have have power folding and puddle lights but soon discovered that you need new door controllers which seem to be very rare and very expensive! All I really wanted was the puddle lights, so thats what i settled for. If I find some door controllers in the future at a reasonable price I will get Eddie-NL to drop them in.
