CAN Gateway - anyone code it for me?
« on: September 03, 2009, 04:45:55 pm »
Can anyone tell me what the latest revision of the CAN Gateway part number is i need to order to be compatible with my Golf Mk5 , and also does anyone have a preferred method for installing a new CAN Gateway module?

Also, a pic of its location would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!!!

Can anyone tell me whether any coding will need to be done after a new module is fitted too?

The battery is dying on my car due to the RNS510 power drain (i believe).

If you got to a dealer with your chassis number they should tell you the latest version for your car.  It will need coding yes.

Gateway isnt in the area by the OBD port, which means it must be in the center console.  :sad1:

Going to have to disconnect the RNS510 until i can find out what version i have and what version i need.

Should have just not bothered.

Getting more and more confused now, seen threads stating that the RCD510 can need Canbus updates, but the RNS510 should be fine without it.

For god sake, can of worms.

I just want it to work without killing my battery.

Going to get this part from the dealership which is in stock:

1K0 907 530 S

Is there anyone locally that can code my car when it is fitted?  :drinking:

Don't fit it until you have a copy of it's current coding, might save you some aggro.

His location is in his profile

I'm confused again. Looking at the original firmware post on my-gti there are people that have had RNS510s installed for months and months, and only since upgrading the FW to 26xx there has been an issue with batteries going flat. Im currently downloading the 11xx FW.

People think that there could be an incompatibility with later firmware and earlier can gateways.

Oh, also, im based in Birmingham.

It's quite possible it's a Gateway Issue - The unit is effectively switched by CAN.  If the Gateway cannot drive the correct signal then it could be that.

Might cause some headaches for dealers upgrading the earlier factory installations

When i spoke to the dealership earlier they said that it is a current problem and there have been recalls. Unfortunately, i dont think my warranty would cover it seing as the unit is retrofitted 2nd hand by myself.

Going to downgrade to 1100 firmware for starters (which will fix the annoying German map issue too) and see if my battery still dies.

If it does, its CAN Gateway upgrade time, but id rather save the £100+ on the part + hassle of getting someone local to code it up.

 :happy2:

Just downgraded my firmware to 1100 as a stop gap. Lost SDHC functionality, which is a pita, but will hopefully stop killing the battery.

Will let everyone know how it goes.

Not sure about the Rns510 but the Rcd510 drains the battery on my o5 gti . Turns out the older can gateway (1k0907530F) in my car cannot communicate properly with the  Rcd510 .  As a result the cars electrical system does not go into hibernate mode, after a defined period,  once car has been switched off .  This in turn leads to a flat battery after about two days without use. The apparent fix is to change, as mentioned in above post ,  the can gateway to the latest version 1k0907530S.
As a short term fix to the battery drain try  pulling  the fuse for the radio when the car is left unused overnight.  Besides the hassle of popping the bonnet to do  this & the radio going through a cold reset each time you replace the fuse i.e  cycles through the  inbuilt six cds  it has stopped the battery drain.
I tried to locate the can gateway today , using a post/pictures  from another site,  but failed . The pictures were from a LHD car which had the part located near the accelerator pedal , but I couldn't find it  :ashamed:
Anybody know where the can gateway resides on a RHD car ?????
