Canbus gateway help
« on: September 29, 2013, 09:06:49 pm »
Hi, I need some advice please. May seem like a stupid question but I need to ask.  I'm upgrading my radio to an rcd510 and need to check what canbus model I have as I have a 56 plate gti. Can I simply unplug the canbus gateway to check the part number on it and plug it back in again with no issues? Or do I need vagcom to plug it back in again?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You should be able to remove it from its holder and be able to look at the P/N without actually disconnecting it.

The easiest way to check is to do a vcds scan.
I suspect with a 56 reg car you will need an updated gateway.

Mine is a 56 and has a K gateway, and the one with the software revision that drains. Same with our 07 Altea, you might be lucky but don't bet on it.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Fitted an RCD510 in my 56 plate recently.. I needed a new canbus, like others have said, probably will need a new one, but you may be lucky

Thank you for the replies. I will look into this week but from the sounds of other people's experience I will need to get a newer version.

I've heard some people claim that you can just re-programme the existing one. Anyone know if this is true?

If not, there is someone on ebay selling pre-coded ones for £85. Looks like the way to go. Anyone had experience of these?

That person on ebay will be Eddie-NL here, pretty sure it is cheaper if you contact him directly.

If you have a K revision I think it can be reprogrammed, however for the costs involved you are best off just putting a newer part in and removing the doubt.

If you dont have access to VCDS just call any VW dealer, give them your reg number and they will give you the part number over the phone.

Didn't realise vw would have that information. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Just checked and it does seem to be eddie_NL. Good to know that he's a member. Sounds like he knows his stuff. If  VW tell me its an older model I'll have to order one from him.

Thanks for the replies.

The only problem you might have is that they will give you the current part number that you can order
