Buying a GTI over 100k miles
« on: September 30, 2013, 11:53:16 am »
Hi Everyone,

Ive always bought cars that are under 100k miles, Im looking for a GTI now and wanted to know how far do these cars actually go to?

as far as im aware the common things to look out for are:

Rust on wings
Failed air con pumps
ABS pump failure
Cam follower change
Split DV
Rear tyre inner wear

I read somewhere about the head being version A than B (is that linked to the cam follower problem)

Most the cars on autotrader in my budget are over 100k miles.

Thanks

I'm at 102k right now and everything is, and has been, great ;p

Only thing on your list I've experienced is the cam follower failure. It was with an upgraded hpfp though, and I didn't know that the tech reinstalled the used c/f. I did however, have an A-version cam in it, so it was all covered by warranty. What you also want to make sure was already done by 100k is the dsg service(if dsg) and the timing belt replacement...both should've been done at, or about, 80k miles ;p

It's not the miles it's how it's been looked after!

That too...Mine is almost always kept spotless as though it were still on the showroom, and the same goes for the care and service of the motor.

Cheers guys.

Looking at a manual gearbox, looking at one later today with 105k on it.

My TDI has 104k and still drives like it should, I just thought maybe Deisels go longer then petrols. But its good to know that they are still running strong!

Thanks again  :happy2:

I met a guy in a motorway service station at the weekend, 05 plate GTI DSG - 152K - still going strong! Looked and sounded great.
Mostly motorway miles. Does most servicing himself. Oil every 5/6K, other bits makers recommended or less.
Looked after and driven reasonably they will last.  :happy2:

Lots of receipts are good too, as long as they are for car parts and not tesco

For me I'd be thinking or resale issues with high miles I'm guessing your budget doesn't stretch to low miles GTI I have just sold a 07 ed30 80k replaced by 08 GTI dsg 38k fully loaded apart from xenons

I'm very happy now oil issues sorted

What was your 80k ED30 worth when you sold it ? Compared to your 38k gti ?

Tyres are a big give away with regards to whether they've cut corners on the cost.
If it's fitted with ditchfinders then walk away too would be my opinion...

Thanks for all the replies guys, Ive noted all these points down.

I had a look at a local one last night, The engine was great but the bodywork and interior was a mess!

I just had to walk away.
