I have been looking at this one.  http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_925273_langId_-1_categoryId_265857

You need a facia surround adaptor, which is about £10, and I think an aeriel adaptor, few quid. Halfords quoted me about £210 fitted.
I'd like a 510 but my funds are limited and this seems to fit the bill. Looks like it will sit well in the dash and not look too bling! Not totally sure about Iphone 5. 4 is ok apparently.

Would I need anything else to run that though? Don't want to be shelling out mega money??

I wouldn't get this mate, I bought a cheap OEM replica off ebay recently and had nothing but trouble! Yeah it's plug in and play but it's cheap for a reason!! I reviewed the unit and listed the issues here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,70489.0.html

Also the facia plate isn't a tenner, that's not the right one for an aftermarket double din like the Kenwood someone mentioned, or the Sony I bought. You'd need one for about £28, plus quite a few extra leads so budget in those. My Sony for example cost me an extra £22 for the Ipod lead, £10 for the Fakra aerial adaptor bit,  £28 for the facia and mounting bracket and £32 for the connection leads.

In the same boat as the op, i really like the rns but i can't justify spending that sort of money plus the need of a new gateway to go with it
