But it could have been sat on a forcourt at some point

Probably this, mine is out of alignment as it was MOT'd twice in two months after it was traded in by the first owner, VW must have done it to sell with a full ticket.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

I spoke to the seller today and he seems like a genuine bloke.

Done a HPI check and it all came back clear. He's got both keys, all manuals, V5, all MOT certs and sat nav disc.

It's also getting a service done tomorrow by a VW specialist.

Arranged to go view it tomorrow so fingers crossed everything goes ok because it's a 240 mile round trip!

Is there anything in particular I should look for on an ED30? Rust? Cambelt changed?

Thanks for your help

I have my view and you have yours , if private sale prices are too cheap there is a hidden issue 99 times out of 100 . I have dealt with issues involving the miss selling of cars , stolen cars , categorised cars , fraud involving cars , cloned cars , rung cars , fake docs , errors by DVLA etc for cars for over 30 years , but then what do i know  :rolleye:

The point was (and still is), that you have to judge every car on its individual merits. This particular car may well be under-priced and hiding something, but the fact it's cheap doesn't ensure it's hiding something.

Not sure where your 99/100 value comes from but I must be extremely lucky, as in quite a lot of years (though, granted: I'm not as old as you  ), I've frequently bought cars under market value and never yet had a bad one. You just have to buy carefully and check them and the seller out. Sellers choose their prices for all sorts of reasons - just wanting to beat a trade-in price, needing a quick sale etc etc.

OP - fingers crossed that this one is 1/100!

People that are the best conmen in the world are the most believable .  Whats the index number and vin ? did you cross refer them on a Data check ?
Ask him direct why he is selling the car less than you think it should be , this may scupper an offer you might want to make him though
Check the Vin Numbers , stamped and the plate aswell as the visible vin . Check date stamps on some of the plastic if you can , some random stuff like if you can . This will have date stamps on them which should tally with the age of the car (No more than 4 months max before the first Reg Date) try to get some dates sfrom the interior and exterior to compare the manufacture dates of the plastics . If the dates are out (all should be very similar with Vw's) ask yourself why ? That could be reasons , can he explain why the dates are out or has he knowledge of replacement parts ? Is the owner on this forum or does he have knowledge of this forum ? Good Luck , as the other poster says - There are genuine bargains out there but be careful  :happy2:

Worth phoning VW with the reg number too - they'll tell you the spec, when they've sold it, and when they've serviced it. Great service - the Audi equivalent has helped me out before, avoiding a clocked car with fake history!

Sorry for the late reply. Basically I didn't go view it.

I'd already done a HPI check but for some reason I decided to do another one with a different company and it came back with a mileage discrepancy.

Date recorded     Recorded by     Mileage reading
22/May/2007      NMR                2,000
09/Jul/2007        NMR                14,000
18/Mar/2008       NMR                9,000
04/Apr/2008       NMR                9,000

The first check came back ok but the second one had a mileage issue and it just put me off. I know the mileage might of been incorrectly entered at some point but I didn't want to travel all that way to be disappointed. I contacted the seller but didn't get a reply back.

The search continues...

At a guess, I'd say that the 14,000 is an input error and should've been 4,000 (would otherwise have done 12,000 miles in about 6 weeks! NMR is notoriously unreliable - it even records HPI mileage that any random punter types into an HPI check. However, even if it is an error you'd just have the same issue come resale time, so I think you made the right decision.

Had the seller at least replied to you, it might've been worth phoning VW to see how their records correlated, but as he hasn't I wouldn't bother. As per the advice on this thread - always worth doing your homework....especially for cars being sold for a perceived low price!

When I was searching for mine I found a really cheap E30 - turns out it was badly crashed but not registered with the insurance.  Nice guy selling it decided to repair it and not tell prospective buyers... I would always steer clear if you have concerns - good car with a fair price will be worth the same when you come to sell IMO.
