New router - what to get?
« on: April 30, 2013, 07:20:03 pm »
I am looking into getting a new router but not clued up on what is good out there now. Currently running an old Netgear one which has been faultless. Have recently bought a D-Link NAS enclosure but struggling with transfer speeds and connecting to it via the web UI. I have been told it maybe due to the router being too slow and upgrading to an N version would help. Mine currently is only a b & g version.

Any help much appreciated.

If your after just a router, then I recommend the excellent ASUS RT-AC66U, or the ASUS RT-N66U if you don't need the very latest technology.
ASUS also do very good Modem/Routers if you need that.
The range on the AC above is simply amazing. :happy2:  I can transfer from my NAS () to PC at 90Mb/s+

Your NAS could also be a bottle neck... if you use your NAS for more than storage ie. streaming and stuff, I'd also highly recommend:

Got this for a £85 with HP's £100 offer; 4 - 5 bay, eSATA, RAID controller... tis great.  Getting around 80-100MB/s wired from PC :)

Already 15GB gone... fully settled at about 90Mb/s for 2hrs+  a major improvement over my previous NAS which I could only get about 30Mb/s to MAX.

So I am still looking to change now. I borrowed a Belkin N1 Vision for a while which helped my needs but kept dropping the internet connection. Just wondering what other recommendations people have along with the Asus ones listed above.
