Overly loud injectors or cam follower?
« on: October 09, 2013, 10:07:38 am »
Lovely sound out of my 08 GTI the last couple of days, seems to be coming from the HPFP side so I'm guessing Cam Follower?

I find it hard to distinguish whether these TFSI are sounding abnormal, as they sound crap when perfectly fine... I'd personally scan it, clear it, scan it.  Grab a cam follower and swap out, if it hasn't been done.

Is it tuned, how many miles?

The cam follower wear a lot quicker when tuned, stands to reason really.

This is what annoys me, fire the car up in the morning and it's hard to tell if it's fine or some random part that's loose or broken. No faults popping up on Torque anyway. Might borrow a VCDS at the weekend.

It's not tuned. Perfectly stock. Has 134,000km, which I think is about 83,000 miles I think.

I'll try and get the HPFP off of it tonight to check the cam follower, just difficult to find the time with the lack of light in the evenings.

It's a fair mileage on the original follower.  I'm sure you've found DIY's of how to do it, but whenever I see peeps doing it, I like to say "Opening the drivers door will prime the fuel pump" as a heads up. :happy2:

I personally left the car overnight and it needed very little bleeding before removing the HPFP.

These engined sound like tractors on tick over lol.

You really should be changing the cam follower every year.

There has been quite a few VERY shocking pictures on here of worn followers. :jumping:

Also check your oil like you have OCD

Yep, I do check the oil nearly every week. Was my first thought when I fired it up. But oil was half way up the stick, and I've topped it up since.

Will check the follower when I get home if it's still lightish.

Some are worse than others my first mkv gti was loud on tick over 56 plate 43000 miles on it ,the mkv gti I own now is much better,my friend has just bought an 06 with 70000 miles on it and is the best most silent idle I've ever heard/seen on a TFSI engine -But it's previous owner was a VW master tech who had fitted the revised camshaft and follower and new hpfp
