Anti roll bar/drop link knocking
« on: October 07, 2013, 09:43:04 pm »
Well as the title says,  I've got a knock on my front drivers side when I go over a speed bump a bit heavy. I'm assuming that's it's the anti roll bar bush or the drop link,  I may change the drop links first then go from there.  However if it's the anti roll bar,  I've heard that these are a bit of a bigger to change as you have to undo all the sib frame or something? I'm lucky to have access to a ramp,  just looking for advice on what you guys may do and what anti roll bar would be a decent replacement on budget,  I've seen a white line roll bar on psi tuning  for 134 but would welcome any others?

Car is a mk5 golf 140 tdi

Thanks

It's not normally the drop link best thing to do is remove both drop links and see if noise is still there if it is then you have eliminated the roll bar and drop links and is more likely a shock or wishbone

Dont know if it's going to be to do with the same thing but noticed this morning that when I first touched the accelerater there would be a knock and it would go until you change gear and put revs back on then it would knock again. I'm hoping they'll be linked.  It could be that it was just cold and the oil could of been cold

If the knock is on the throttle back or when you take your foot off the accelerator it could be a worn gearbox or engine mount.

Well I managed to get it on the ramp for a quick look last night and noticed that the wishbone rear bushes are starting to split and are close to being fully gone, looked towards the gearbox and noticed that there was a slight leak of oil,  didnt get chance to find where from so I think the next step is going to be changing the gearbox oil first and mount for the gearbox and engine,  and get a powerflex dog mount,  should the knock still there then it could maybe be the inner cv joint? Maybe?

None of the symptoms you describe would cause the knocking noise.
Problem when you start looking at issues is unless you go about it right , you end up getting drawn down 150 different alleyways.

The knocking will almost certainly be a drop link followed by an ARB bush.
It takes 40 minutes to drop the subframe and take the roll bar out. You don't even need to fully drop it you can just undo the bolts so it drops down without actually removing them
