Buy the Pirelli in the for sale section asap , before he gets it back to standard  :innocent:

Save you a few quid too

The Black Pirelli is a bargain at the price he is selling at if you want a Stage tuned car

We went out to buy the wife an S3 and came back with an Edition 30

We are on Edition 30 number 2 now,  the Edition 30 just seemed to tick all the boxes for a few grand less than the S3

But its personal choice

What about a BMW 130i? 265 BHP standard and a future classic. Doesn't depreciate much either.

The S3 if you don't mind the understated looks and lack of feel when driving, fast though but if you map it prepare to factor in a new clutch as they are made of chocolate.

It's personal choice but heres my two pennies worth: (I'd have the S3 if it were me)

S3: Awesome machine, 4WD and you already have some of the bits that we use to go Stage >2 on the Golfs (intercooler). You'll be able to put down the power better on 4WD. Understated looks and the cabin is a bit boring. I went DSG when I bought my GTI and I'll never look back - saves so much arm and leg ache on the old M25!

Golf GTI: Go Edition 30, great car. I love it to bits. Only downside is its 2WD in my opinion so big power equals either mega foot control or a problem laying down the power. ED30 is pretty much the same edition as the S3. Looks the bo***cks as well :-)  Again, love the DSG...

Astra VXR: I've had 2 of these before, the first was standard and was ok, nothing special (cabin, build quality and handling was no where close to VAG cars). The second was Stage 2 and I went through 2 gearboxes, 4 clutches and 1 engine - Needless to say I wouldn't get another one! Ironically I've just seen it on Pistonheads for sale so if you see a BV07 car don't buy it!

Cupra R: Great car, same platform as GTI ED30 and S3. Cabin isn't as good as the Golf/S3 in my opinion.

BMW: Great cars, RWD so you get lots of rear-end-slide-ability if you want it. You do become hated though by the majority of the rest of road users as unfortunately they have a reputation for c*ck drivers (apologies if anyone on here has one and doesn't drive like a c*ck)

Can't really comment on Stage 3 power as its really down to the individual cars, maps, hardware you use to get to Stage 3 (i.e. which intake/cooler/exhaust etc). I wouldn't try Stage 3 on a VXR though unless you have plenty of cash to spend on rebuilds and maintenance.

Cheers, Simmo

Very interesting, I'm in the same boat too as looking at these.

Is the s3 less involving / interesting / fun to drive than the ed30/gti though? I've read a lot of journos who say its a fast cruiser?!

Also, how does the 130i rate against these for involvement? I have a 3.0 Z4 e85 and it's okay but not the most exciting machine dynamically. Unbelievably though the engine will do 40mpg on a run and 32 round town!
