Fitting a 6R (MK8) Polo steering wheel into a MK5? [RESOLVED]
« on: November 01, 2013, 05:13:04 pm »
I've found a steering wheel out of a 2011 Polo for £30.
Since I didn't want a MF, just a simple wheel, the Polo one seems perfect. :drinking:
Anyone know if it is a straight swap?
I've seen one in a MK4 before, but not sure if it took any work to get it to fit.

Don't know if anyone is interested in this, but I got my wheel and test fitted it.
Just waiting on the airbag now, and I can put it in properly.

Altogether ended up costing about £200

I think it'll look awesome with the horn push :jumping:

I trust you have ordered the proper airbag, an easy mistake to get the wrong one with so many different versions

I had a problem with the seller, so haven't got one yet, and my money is going elsewhere for now.
I'll probably get on this in the next few weeks.
What do you mean different versions? My plan was to get a polo 6R airbag and horn push and splice the mk5 connector onto the polo loom
Thanks

Eddie, would that be the right way to go about it do you think? I don't want to turn the key and have it explode in my face haha!
Thanks :notworthy:

the loom will work ok, but will need a bit of modifying to get the horn to work.

look at your wheel and see how the airbag clips in

and compare it with this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-flat-bottom-GTI-steering-wheel-with-DSG-/121212560002?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c38d4e282#ht_583wt_1170

your wheel and the one above uses an airbag type like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-6-MK6-PASSAT-CC-SCIROCCO-GENUINE-DRIVER-AIRBAG-5K0880201-/190970050934?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c76b3b976#ht_2621wt_932

(although the one above won't fit your wheel)

Okay, so the difference being that is a GTI wheel, but a non-GTI airbag?
Sorry if I'm not getting it :signLOL:
Also, what sort of modifications will I have to do to get the horn working?
Thanks for your help

If you look at the GTi wheel there are 2 lugs

Look at the airbag and on the base that clips into the steering wheel there are 2x metal loops that clip on to the lugs

Compare that with your wheel which has 2 spring type clips (also lower than the lugs)

The airbag cover is correct for both the GTi wheel and your wheel, but the base is different

Hope you understand as I can't explain it any better

Okay, I think I've got you haha, I just need to make sure I get a picture of the back of the airbag, so I can see if the fittings line up and are the same type of fitting?
Yeah I don't know why I didn't buy a complete wheel, would've been easier haha

Of course.
I don't have access to a computer right now, so a phone screenshot will have to do. I'll edit this and add a link when I get in.
Should be easy enough to find from this though

It's a MK4 set, the ones I bought are no longer listed
Don't quote me on this, from what I've read online, they are the same.. Probably worth looking into this though, I haven't found much info.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
