Battery drain...Please help!
« on: November 02, 2013, 01:29:23 am »
Hi all.

Ive got a RNS 510 Version C LED fitted to my 05 golf gti. Its got the 3810 noru firmware on it which is supposed to prevent the battery from draining, but this morning I tried starting the car and it wouldnt start. Just a ticking noise. I took my dads car out as i was in a hurry. Just got back and tried starting it again and still nothing except this time the lights wont come on either.

How come the battery still drained? Is it because its a version C led?

Ive used the same fw on version B rns510s and had no issues.

Update: jump started the car. It was at 6volts this morning! .

Not sure of its my battery or alternator.

On idle the battery reads  13.75. On rev it reads 13.92.

Switched car off and it goes straight down to 12.1 and drops slowly

Any ideas?

The car has been parked a while before I bought it.

Unplug the rns and see if the issue persists

Hi rich.

Disconnected the rns and when car has been switched off it goes down to 12.5 and drops until 12.39 and stops there.  (

Ive also disconnected the parrot bluetooth as well which I dont like!

Connected a rns version B with the same firmware I had on the version C LED, started  the car up for a few mins. Turned car off and voltage has now dropping till 12.31 and going down very slowly. Like 1v per minute. Its now stopped at 12.27 for a long time.

The rns has switched off, cant hear any fans or cd spinning

Ok. Battery still draining! After 2 hours, Voltage dropped to 11.80v and can hear the car struggling to start.

Next step is to downgrade to 2760 modified and see what happens.

Downgraded firmware,  left battery overnight,  voltage this morning was 11.3v

Car didnt start, it tries to turn over but makes a ticking noise and the lights on dash flash with the clicks.

Starter motor maybe?

Thats a really old one... you need to get a new one and that will fix your problem with the RNS draining the battery!

But this morning the battery didn't drain as much then when i had the led one.

I had to jump start again this morning :(

I got a feeling it might be the battery on its way out.  But first I will remove the rns completely and put it back to rcd300 and see what happens.

Cheers rich

Absolutely... if the car is fine with the RCD then you know what to do!   :happy2:

Hello mate, I've been through exactly the same process as you and here is my solution which worked for me;

You basically need to do exactly as I did, in order to get your unit fully updated and ready for the latest maps with 7 digit postcode search and loads of POI's.

1. Go to this website, http://www.rnsfirmware.com/ and first download and install the 3810a firmware.
2. Then you need to download and install the 4020 firmware. (Both these firmwares' are modified, so that you don't need to recode your unit using a Vag Com cable.)
3. Now install the VUCI fix, from here; http://dfiles.eu/files/a523wbwxf (If RNS-510 complains about downgrade error, insert media and reboot unit by pressing Setup + Eject + Info/Mic/whatever top right button together)

If you do it in this order you will not suffer battery drain issues and you will have a newer firmware for your unit, which is a 'C' version, with video in motion and full 7 digit postcode entry.

I believe you can also update your firmware to the latest version as you have a later model of RNS 510.  The new firmware is in the 5XXX range.

Zayd I've used the modified fw on many cars and no one has ever reported their battery to drain.

I've disconnected the rns now. Will wait till tomorrow morning to see if it still drains . If it does then I can rule the rns out and know my battery is fooked.

I only had my GTI six weeks and coincidently the battery drained after I upgraded the firmware to 4020 modified.  I think it was my battery that was at fault though.  It displayed the exact same symptoms that you're experiencing, where it just wouldn't start, but kept clicking.  I tried boosting the battery with my donor car and the VW one just would not hold its charge.  No sooner did I disconnect the cables, but it immediately started to discharge.

The battery wasn't the right amps for my car anyhow and after fitting a Bosch silver with 74 amps about 2 weeks ago, I haven't had a single issue.
