Just to clarify - piece of mind
« on: November 03, 2013, 12:53:56 pm »
I have booked the GTi in to a VAG specialist for a oil service and 'mini brake upgrade' and have given me an estimate for the work.

Now the oil they have quoted for is Quantum Platinum 5w-40 Full Synthetic  - Now I am running Castrol Edge Pro 5w-30 LL.
I have not heard of Quantum before this quote. I have done some research and I have found that it is an 'own brand' oil.  But I see members prefer Castrol.....

Now, for the mini brake up grade they have quoted

Neuspeed S/S brake lines
Super Blue Performance Brake Fluid - I presume ATE
EBC Yellow Stuff pads.

I have not Neuspeed before this quote either. They good make/quality?

Now I have no plans to do a track day anytime soon, just a fast road brake set-up. Hopefully this will be okay.  Your thoughts.

I plan to call the garage tomorrow morning just to discuss this work further.

Quantum is good oil. Shouldn't be a problem.

OEM brake fluid should be fine for your needs.
As for front pads I would get some Ferodo DS2500 or Brembo HP Sport ones.
Without traction power is nothing!

I wouldn't put EBC pads on a go kart never mind a car... never mind a GTI.

Quantum oil is just budget oil. Works fine, but there are better oils out there. 5w40 is what I fit in 90% of cars.

EBC pads have got better, but they are still rather pants. Go for the ferodo ds2500 as they are a great all round pad.   No real need for the braided lines tbh.

Yes it was fine for about two weeks of driving, then the pedal went spongy and I have to pump the pedal to get any sort of feel. that was a year ago.  Fine is good for a humble city car or a 100hp car, but a GTi, hmmm, naa.

Unless you are tracking the car OEM fluid is fine. I have driven my car like a total bellend around the yorkshire moors all day... did a whole tank of fuel in about 190 miles and didnt loose my brakes!

Well according to our brake guru DaveB1976 if it's good enough for a Bugatti Veyron then it will be more than fine for your gti.
Do also remember that our ABS units specify using low viscosity brake fluid like the OEM one. Super Blue doesn't meet that requirement but nevertheless many on here use it without issue.
