Newbie with a noisy ED30 startup question
« on: November 03, 2013, 08:56:10 pm »
Evening all. I'm on the hunt for a car and looked at an ED30 today. Car is on 57 plate, covered about 30K miles and is all very tidy and tight. Looking at the history it had belts and water pump replaced after 4 years. However, on startup it makes an almighty diesel clatter which with the bonnet up was clearly coming from the right hand side of the engine. The noise is only on startup, the engine is otherwise sounding fine.

I've had a look through some posts here and sounds like this could be a cam chain/tensioner issue. What says everyone? My wife has a Mk6 1.4 TSI and this too has a diesel sound on startup which I understand is to do with the timing chain and while it's a bit disconcerting it's certainly quieter than this ED30.

Take a look at this I'm selling, if it doesn't sell as it is it will be going back to standard early December.

Nice machine but pushing my budget a bit and am looking for something unmodified.

Spoke with the garage selling the one I looked at and their mechanic said it was fine. Decided to walk away nonetheless and leave it for someone more informed than me to take a punt on it.

Would still be interested to know if diesely start up clatter is normal on these but seeing other examples should help put me in the picture more I guess.

I can't say I've noticed mine sounding like that however I have seen it mentioned quite a few times from others.
I believe its just the way the tfsi engines are.

Strangely when I test drive an ED30 at a dealership the sales man knew nothing about the car.
On the test drive he thought it was a diesel !
