Hi,
Final update...
Pressure sensor was the culprit, although aparrantly the sensors look oily when they fail, mine was as new! So sensor replaced, system vacuum tested, all ok, re gassed and checked for leaks using sniffer, no leaks!
Air con now is icy cold and sorted. Total bill was £266, which also included a cvbootreplacement whilst the car was in.
Hope this might help someone in the future, Happy days!
Thanks to all,

Woody

Can I ask was that at a main dealer or an aircon specialist?

I got quoted £150 at an Indy years ago on my TDI to replace the sensor.
Although that includes a CV boot which is about £20 in parts and book time an hour.

I have a similar problem on my ed30. VW are talking silly prices to run diag's. think they saw me coming. Is this something any auto electrician can look at/garage or is it specialist?

Just use an Aircon specialist - such a  common problem!

Prices vary depending on your location - North East England - price £120.00 parts and labour.

Could do it yourself. Think there is a guide on here. Not too tricky apparently. Got to do mine at some point.
