DSG jerky take off (outside of warranty)
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:23:16 pm »
Apologies for another DSG thread but I have searched the previous ones and cant find an answer.

I recently bought an 08 GTI DSG (independant dealer - 5 weeks ago) and have noticed that it jerks away from a standstill (all other gear changes seem fine); as I read in another thread it feels a bit like I have terrible clutch control and have applied too much throttle.  The only way I can avoid looking like a terrible driver is to let the brake off and allow the car to start to move by itself before accelerating - or being incredibly delicate with my right foot (not easy wioth my size 11s!)

This is my second GTI DSG and I assumed it was just a slight difference in the car but after a bit of a google I realise that this is potentially a common fault with the DSG box on cars of this age.  The car has done 85k and the service book indicates 2 DSG services (40 and 80) but the SH is not with VW.  From what I have read it appears the first action is to have the box serviced by VW but I am reluctant to do this 5k after it was aledgedly last done - is there a way I can check who did the DSG service (as I understand this needs to be done by a specialist / VW?).  Do I have a hope in hell of getting any support from VW on this or am I going to be on my own?

I realise I need to ask my dealer (Murrays - Plymouth) but forewarned is fore armed.  Would appreciate any advice.  Thanks

Thanks

Around 08 there was a batch of cars that had faulty mechatronics units and were subject to a recall. It would be worth going down this route first.

Failing that, the law is on your side (if you're in the UK). Indepdendent dealers need to provide a year's warranty on the car with the burden of proof being on the delear for the first 6 months and the buyer for the 2nd 6 months. If there is a fault with the car they need to prove that the fault was not on the car at the time of sale or repair the car.

Either way, you should be able to get it sorted. Best of luck

Thanks for the quick reply.  I was assuming that because this is 'wear and tear' on the box then it wouldn't be covered by the 3rd party warranty that the dealer provided but I guess it would be worth trying that route. Will give them a call tomorrow and see what they say

Not tried this yet.  Is this something that I can do or should I take it to VW?

Basically. When you have a dsg service the oil should be drained and a new filter fitted. You don't have to use dealer, however when it's done it has to be done by someone with the VW vac com computer system. This is to ensure the oils temp and level is correct. They then have to perform a basic settings reset. All this is Part of a dsg service

Iv got the same problem on mine. I have to let the car roll in gear a little before giving some gas for it to move off smoothly otherwise it jerks, all gear changes r fine and now iv noticed a slight clunk sound when the car down gears when the car comes to a stop. Get the car on a VAG computer and check any fault codes on the transmission module first.
Iv been to a view gearbox places and two of them are saying it's the mechatronic and the other two told me
It's the wet clutch pack. Both are expensive fixes so your better off going back to the garage who sold you the car.

Quick update...

Just spoke to VW (Murrays Plymouth) and they suggested it could be the Twin Mass Flywheel.  Said I should take it in for a diagnistic (£100)

Have contacted the garage I bought it from and arranging to take it in next week so they can look at it

Will update on here with the outcome

Thanks again to all that replied

It will be the mechatronics, not the dual mass flywheel.

quick update on this one.  The car has now been to Exeter Gearbox centre (through my dealer) who have advised it is likely to be the mechatronic unit.  They are currently investigating if there is an option to replace only the mechatronic unit (£1500) or if the gearbox needs replacing as well (total £3k).  should hear by eo day

Some questions for anyone kind enough to repond....

1) Can one be replaced without the other?

2) the dealer is suggesting I have an external warranty (bought with the car) that will cover me for up to £1000.  If its just the mchatronic unit then someone needs to cough up the extra £500.  Am I wrong to think that this should be paid for by the dealer?(had the car for just over 4 weeks when I reported it to them) Or would I be expected to pay some / all of this?

would appreciate any advice here as I will need to talk to the dealer at the end of the day and woudl be good to know where I stand

thanks as always for your help

Mines an 08 plate if I pull away smoothly it's clean but I find its jerky only in first when I gave it too much gas

Sounds similar but mine is definitely not right (not just a heavy right foot!)- confirmed by the dealer (having driven it) and a couple of mechanics.  I gather its not the end of the world but it does take away from the driving experience and having just spent £9k on the car I do want to get it sorted

My 07 edition 30 gives off these symptoms, slight jerk on take off and you can hear it click down the gears with the window down but it drives lovely, launch control works fine etc.  It is still under the 3 month warranty from the dealer, do i send it back now ? It was fine on test drive which is why i bought it.

For the record its much better than my 05 gti's box was except the gti was quite smooth to pull away but not perfect.
