Same situation as I was in with my 08 plate GTI.
Bought from a seat dealer with a 3 month warranty.
I took it straight to VW who said it was the Mechatronic Unit which was replaced and my car drives absolutely brilliant now, probably the best auto style box I've driven. After the work was completed I checked my warranty & this also said I had a £1k limit!! God knows who ended up paying for the job, but it wasn't me. :happy2:

So it is possible to replace a mechatronic unit on its own then?  That's encouraging

Anyone else have any thoughts as to where I stand with an excess over £1k?

Latest from the dealer is that whilst they acknowledge it isnt perfect, the gearbox specialist they took it to suggest that it isnt a fault and isnt likely to worsen.  From what I have read on here (and elsewhere) this is almost certainly the start of a mechatronic fault but I do accept that at present the symptoms are more of a niggle than a specific fault (debatable I know - but Im not an expert!)

Dealer is suggesting he will extend my warranty for me (going up from £1k to £5k cover in 4 months when the current policy runs out) but at the moment they arent prepared to do anything about it.  Is this fair?  I am inclined to hold out for the issue to worsen (after the warranty upgrades cover from £1k to £5k) but it does feel a bit like I am taking the gamble here and they dont seem to have to do anything.  Or am I expecting too much for something that is not yet a fault per se?

Would welcome any views on this as I need to get back to the dealer tonight.  thanks again for your help

I don't think there is much you can as their "gearbox specialist" say's there isn't a fault.

I would be inclined to get a second opinion from VW and take that report to them but you will have to front the cost of the diagnosis.

Quick update on this.  6 months have passed and still have the same issue - but not much by way of deterioration.

Dealer has offered me an Auto-protect warranty in case anything goes wrong, but he wants me to contribute to this (£175 of the £350 cost for 12 months).  The cover claim limit is sufficient but I hear so many horror stories about these warranty companies that I am concerned I will pay out for the warranty and then if I can get some proof the mechatronic unit has gone / is going that they wont pay out for it anyway

Has anyone got any experience of getting this sorted through a warranty company (other than VW own)?  and anyone with any experience of AutoProtect that I should consider?

Dealer is being a bit slippery and less helpful now that 6 months have passed - I guess he thinks that even if I can prove the issue that he is off the hook after 6 months - even though I reported it to him after 1 month and he failed to resolve the issue.  would welcome any other suggestions?  eg do I just pay VW the £150 to diagnose the mechatronic unit?  or do I just have to live with it / sell the car?

Mine does the same, I bought my car off my sisters fella so no warranty, mines on 130k on 56 plate gt tdi, I find it does it if you miss time putting your foot down, say if your in neutral then go into drive and put your foot down before it engages gear it jerks slightly, but if you let it engage then go easy on the pedal its fine, to me its more how your are with the throttle and the timing, if you time it right its nice and smooth. I do get the occasional noise when down changing but noting that makes me worry, will see what its like when it goes in for a dpf delete and remap soon.

Just had my 08 30 edition a few days now & it was a bit jerky in traffic last night from 2-1st gear.
Read most of the forums but can't tell if it's normal or an issue as most folk say the clunkyness of the DSG at low speeds is 'normal' ??

Meant to say mine is at 55k miles & both DSG & engine are revo mapped to stage 1.
This morning & today in traffic the car was perfect but noticed when the car is put into park it moves a few inches before it comes to a stop?

@ Hercules78
I would say if your paying half of the warranty I would get a letter from the dealer stating their intensions & also pay to get a second opinion from VW on the DSG anlysis.
Also keep a diary of events incase you need to go to consumer protection. If dealer won't write you a letter i would just write a letter to them & get them to countersign it as an agreement.

Iv got a receipt for nov 2012 where my mechatronics was done on my 08ED which had a £0 price on and warranty work, did they replace them with updated ones or the same? Don't fancy paying out money like they want for new parts.

Hope you get yours sorted and not cost you a fortune mate, the joys of motoring

Thanks for the input.  when you say letter from the dealer stating intentions - do you mean intention to resolve the DSG issue (as I may struggle with that).  If its intention to pay half the warranty then I already have that (as now is the time they need to cough up) - unfortunately the letter didn't state what level of cover so they are trying to wriggle for the cheaper option.  Im going to have to battle with them to get half the warranty at a level that will cover the mechatronic unit, so if I find out on here that's not of use to me I wont push it too much with the dealer.

My first DSG GTI was perfect - smooth all the way through but after this I wont be buying another DSG that's for sure

ps. I have the same when I put it in to park but I have had this on most autos I have driven in the past

Had a reset by an Indy but didn't make any difference.  Do I need vw to do it properly?

Best to write your own letter then & hand it to them for countersign.
State exactly how you see things & if they don't agree at least you know where you stand.

Mine seems to be intermittent now, all the way into work was fine but got to last roundabout & it was a bit jerky in 2-1st again.
Its had a mixture of fuel since i got it so was thinking it might be that as ive not had a chance to fill up with shell v-power yet.

Dealer has offered me £150 towards the warranty but if the auto protect warranty is not going to cover it then am I better off using the £ for vw to device the dsg? It was done by an independent a few years back but I have no evidence other the a tick in the book

Has anyone had any experience with auto protect covering a mechatronic unit?  Thanks for all the replies

Hi all, im new here only just registered with this forum, I too have a VW golf mk5 GTI 57plate and currently having the exact same problems if not worse, gearbox goes into neutral and PRNDS flashes on the MFD- display where the gear selector shows on the front dash, bought the car from an indy in nov 2013 and told them straight away something was wrong, they blagged me over a few times until I got a littler serious with them, they took it on,

long story short back n forth they told me go here and there, they eventually did a DSG oil service, car was fine for a few months (DSG oil service was done in jan/feb 2014 I think) but recently car got worse and quite unsafe to drive due to gears going into neutral whilst driving on the A406!, they did give me an 3monthRAC warranty which did f all as it didn't cover anything, they pushed the limit up to 5k I believe but symptons were reduced, speaking as of now I took out warranty with WarrantyDirect as ive read a few forums which state they cover the Mechatronics unit, im no expert but I was pretty darn sure since these symptons started I knew its gotta be the mechatronics ( heavy googling and forum research loll!!).

Spoke to WD last week as my warranty was 4months in so thought would be safe to make a claim now, they advised me of a garage in biggleswaid? apologies for spelling, recovery truck came down last Friday nice chap, picked up the car and they called today to update me and guess what, Mechatronics unit is failing/failed, they said they will contact WD( warranty direct) and make the claim and stated it should be covered or may have to pay 50% off labour parts, which would be around 800 pound from my self off the 1600 bill, or I wont need to pay nothing if my warranty cover ive taken out covers it all , they said they will let me know Tuesday, however ive just checked my policy document, claim limit up to value of the car, guessing that's around 6/7k? so hopefully im sorted , I also did mention upon first taking out warranty with them that I clearly want the mechatronics unit to be covered under all circumstances, they agreed said yes its all covered, so waiting with fingers crossed till Tuesday to hear from them, lastly this is my first post! haha so apoligies for the essay type write up, wanted to include as much info! :happy2:
