A little off topic as its not a golf but still VW...
« on: November 08, 2013, 02:42:29 pm »
Bit off topic I know guys, but a work colleague has a newer model VW camper van 2010 (Guess its a transporter really)…. He is having huge issues with engine management and after several trips to the dealers its come down to the EGR needing replacing (or that’s what he is being told) I understand these can be cleaned out… but how easy a job is it to get these off and cleaned… currently he’s being quoted £700 for it to be replaced….

I’m no expert but sounds like he’s getting a right royal spanking…

thanks for any advice.

If he mainly does short journeys, try spanking it (technical term), to burn off the soot.  It needs to get really hot, so keep the revs up for around twenty minutes.

Yeah he's tried, from the info I can see floating about on the internet it seems most cases these can be removed cleaned and even mapped out to stop the problem... it was when they quoted £700 to replace that he fell off his chair... I could maybe understand if its a lot of engine to strip to get the part or if there is more then just replacing the EGR cleaning the manifold etc (I'm no mechanic so not sure what is involved)... however the more and more I get to know my GTI the more I realise that some jobs just aint as big a job as you get told... and often something worth attempting yourself...

Thanks tho buddy
