Major issues..advice required!
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:20:13 pm »

Afternoon all,

On the weekend, I swapped cars with my bro so I could go and pick the wife and kids up from her mums in Oxford. He's got a new A180 CDI and it only made sense, seen as though it does 65mpg!

Anyways, got a call from him late Saturday afternoon, saying that he's had to call the AA and in turn they've called for a recovery truck. He told me whilst in slow moving traffic, the gears had locked up and the car had stalled. Initially, it wouldn't let him release the key either - but he said once he had switched the ignition off, put his foot on the brake pedal, it allowed him to shift to P and release the key.

As soon as I got back home last night, I went to the Indy specialist it had been recovered to see what's what.

When I put my key in, everything seems normal - but it won't start. Not even a sound. I'm able to move the gear lever - but it sticks in D - on the way up from S. I have to then turn the ignition off and on again, which allows me to move the lever back up to P and release the key. Also, the PRNDS lights on the dashboard are flashing.

Whilst away, I did a bit of googling and there's one thing that matches the symptoms - a safety mechanism, which is caused by a movement of the lever, whilst the car is moving - which in turn causes a a pin to lock the system up??

As you can imagine, I'm bricking the outcome of all this. Hopefully, it's the DSG hardware rather than the mechatronics/software issue. He's sticking it on the VCDS tomorrow and see what he can find. Has anyone here or know of anyone to encounter this problem?

As your bro admitted to moving the dsg lever whilst in motion, if so you know your answer already. If he says he hasn't moved it then vag com should give you the answer. The only thing I would do is find out exactly  what my brother did and didn't do, then investigate. It's an easy mistake to make.... Owning up is the hard part

Sorry for a bit of a thread hijack but are you saying you shouldn't switch a dsg to neutral when moving? I personally don't do this but it's a good thing to know if that is the case!

Moving to N isn't advised but at the same time isn't an issue.

I have been going full chat and thought I was in manual mode, moved the lever up and stuck myself in neutral. Not a problem.

Afternoon,

Apologies for the late reply, I've been trying to get to the bottom of the issue!

I asked my brother what he did and when. He said he had the car in triptronic mode and tried to moved it back to D. It would let him, so he parked up and twitched the car off. Once the ignition was off, he said it wouldn't let him shift to park to pull the key out either.  I've been to have another look today and was a little mixed up from my initial posting.

As I turn the ignition on, the PRNDS lights flash on the dash. The car doesn't start. I'm able to move the knob down through to 'S' - but when I try moving back up - it sticks in D. I have to then turn the ignition all the way around, as if I'm starting her again, back to 0 am I'm then allowed to shift back to P and remove the key.

I've read that the DSG has a safety mechanism, which will prevent any use of the car - until that mechanism is reset. How and where, I don't know.

Having just read this thread, it seems to me a selector issue. I have the same symptoms.
