Help me choose an engine

I'm driving myself insane trying to decide which mk6 to go for! The gti is a bit special and I'm trying to get that in the new car.

I want economy I'm trying to get close to her C1 which does real world 62mpg (true story) And I want dsg.

Performance would be a plus although not THAT necessary, willing to stage 1 to improve.

Insurance isn't an issue as me and the mrs even on a gti is only £380.

I was pretty set on a 1.6 match with blue motion tech but we do 8miles to work mainly motorway and back. Loads of people saying dpf issues? Stage 1 map will give it enough power I think. I have vcds so can always force regeneration so should I worry about that?

The 1.4tsi worrys me with all the issues people have been having at stage 1, plus with a heavy foot I think it would use loads of fuel vs performance when compared to the 1.6tdi.

2.0tdi 140 in gt trim....this has become my new favourite. Just disappointed rvc isn't standard like on the match.

Then there's the gti and gtd....I would love the gti obviously but economy goes out the window!

I want to spend 10-12k but can easily spend more just don't want to

GTI / GTD what's the point in not having what you want if you can afford it?   I quite like the Rocco 170.

Well that money could be better spent/saved elsewhere so really wanted to keep running costs low. Gti/gtd doesn't shout cheap to run

GTD gets my vote as it comes with all GTI refinements available at extra cost but worth it as it would be economical when needed but also some power under your right foot when necessary! No smoke no poke.

I also vote GTD.

It seems like the compromise you might be after, GTI looks with decent performance and better economy. Reports of mpg with the GTD here:

I haven't heard of too many issues with the GTD either, it's the petrol causing more grief .

if you are only doing 16 miles a day you are not going to save a fortune on fuel, get he car you really want, the GTI

Missed that bit...mileage is low for a Diesel to fully benefit.

As for forced regens that really isn't an ideal way of managing the process, I reckon you might end up overshooting journeys to finish the process.

As others have said where's the benefit to go diesel?  It's going to cost you more to get a GTD than Mk6 GTI (which all things being considered is the only diesel alternative in the Golf Range to a GTI), weigh up the costs mate --- think I remember doing it a long time ago and it's in the region of 15k plus miles a year to see an advantage of the derv over petrol.

That said, christ your only doing 8 miles a day commuting... any old shag heap for the commute then a V8 in the garage.

I do over 15k miles a year so it had to be something fair on mileage return for me and I can only manage one car.

If I was in a similar situation to yourself and practicalities allowed, I'd have a £1500-£2000 daily diesel for the commute and then put £12k+ towards an e46 M3 or something of that fruit as the 'rest of the time' car

  Its for the Mrs mainly so don't fancy her driving a v8. Its not just fuel that costs more on a GTI though. Tyres, servicing, parts all generally cost more. Plus DSG GTI's all start at 15k ish, which again is more than i ideally want to spend.

I do make journeys down to London, Manchester and ATM my current GTI just drinks fuel compared to what i imagine a little 1.6tdi would.

Its both of us doing 8miles, so 32miles a day. So inc trips on days off around 10k a year.

Im pretty convinced if i get a GTI i will be constantly thinking I should have gone more economical.

My 2nd "fun" car is going to be an mx5 or possibly a bike depending on how i feel coming summer time. Im currently buying the car we could have for 5/6years and needs to suit possibly kids/longer commute to work once we have moved.

IIRC there's a way to fake the economy of the fuel computer in VCDS... problem solved. Ignorance is bliss

^^^^ I need to do that. After a blast in mine I want it to say 91mpg not 19mpg!
