Help! Low oil pressure

I was driving home from work last night and after about 6 miles there was a momentary hesitation at about 60mph but only for a nano-second.
A few miles later the oil pressure light came on. I slowed down and it went out but it came on again twice more before I got home.
I checked the oil this morning and the level seems to be too high and there was a very small bit of mayo on the tip and lots on the filler cap.
There doesn't appear to be any oil in the water and the level is ok.
I am thinking the hesitation was the head gasket blowing and water is getting into the oil causing problems with the pump.
Where to start? 05 car 116k.

Thats an interesting read, I think I may get my sump dropped and pick up checked........... prevention better than cure

Thanks, I read that one and many others. Hopefully that is all that is wrong and a new pick-up pipe will do the trick. It was the tiny bit of mayo on the dip stick
that got my mind thinking and the high oil level but I may have over filled it when I changed the oil recently.

That's a great guide you posted, how long did it take to do the job?

Thanks, I read that one and many others. Hopefully that is all that is wrong and a new pick-up pipe will do the trick. It was the tiny bit of mayo on the dip stick
that got my mind thinking and the high oil level but I may have over filled it when I changed the oil recently.

That's a great guide you posted, how long did it take to do the job?

All in about 2 and a half - 3 hours , a good chunk of that was cleaning the sump. and allowing a 30 minute dry time for the gasket sealant.
Slight mayo is not really an indication of anything especially on these engines.
A headgasket going should not in theory cause oil pressure problems , if the HG blew badly enough to cause low oil pressure it'd be eating through oil &/or coolant like nothing else.

No, but reading up on it, it doesn't seem so much of a problem on the AXX engine.

Good point, there is no sign of oil in the coolant either which, btw, appears to be plain water!

I think I will pull it apart tomorrow and have a look.

The mayo in the filler cap is normal from what I understand due to the deep filler hole. I have seen a few like it including mine

It's condensation. A good blast will clear it.

All done and better than ever thanks to the advice on here.

Been for 25 mile drive and no oil pressure problems, it seems to run better but that may be psychological!

An added bonus is that my emissions light has also gone off.

I checked my cam follower while I had the cover off and that was ok.

If the oil was overfull, it could have been topped up with fuel from a leaking HPFP. Worth checking that too - it has happened to folk before
