A question for people who know how MOTs work!
« on: November 15, 2013, 05:03:21 pm »
A vehicle fails an MOT. Car is fixed. Car goes back 3 days later is is eligible for a partial retest .

What is a partial retest? Is that merely checking the repair part? And if that's ok, test certificate issued?

Cheers

Basically, yes. They will check whatever failed, if all is good pass it and job done.

Yes as above they will just check what it failed on, but if a certain amount of time has passed since it was tested then it will be to retest fully again.

Some garages will demand the car have any failings fixed with them (as it states on the MOT Certificate) most are cool in my experience, you have up to 10 days to get it retest done free of charge.

Depends what it fails on

Some things can be taken away and retested by just checking them

And some major fails either need to be fixed by the garage or if the car is taken away they need to do a full retest.

Brake line not working to one wheels say. No material impact on anything else but to one wheel and handbrake.

Should only be a retest I reckon.

if your car failed on the brakes in the rollers then it will be a part retest

I'm a tester and Iv always been under the impression that it dosnt matter what it fails on it can go away be fixed and as long as it's been fixed to a good standard its fine to be passed. Would be interested to see where it states otherwise?

thing it depends on the garage to be honest I know if the car fails and gets repaired and the mot tester is happy then we don't charge

SO they'll just check the fail items? If that's OK, you get the pass?

Thank you! Both replies have helped alot!

Well all I want to confirm is that emissions etc won't be done again! Won't say anymore on that!

if the mot just checks what it fails on then no but if they say it needs a full retest then it will need the emissions checking again
