MOT + Downpipe (De-cat)
« on: November 19, 2013, 10:50:48 am »
Hi All,

How do you folks with a decat downpipe deal with MOT time? The car will fail on emissions so how do you get around this?

Thanks

Not sure if such garages exist in Basingstoke though!!

I think swapping the pipes out would be a great hassle, even if it is just once a year...is it really that easy, jack the front of the car up, put it on axle stands and undo some bolts? They don't all look so easy to reach though..

People pay every year for them to be swapped.

I never went decat because it wasn't worth the hassle.

How much do you think the swap over would cost?

I would guess a mechanic would charge 1 hours labour in total for both swaps, so you're looking at £70~, add that to the MOT fee and you'll be looking at £130 per year for an MOT (providing it does not fail)!!

Takes an hour to swap, we did my precat delete (dropped whole exhaust) in about 45 minutes and I had a seized bolt (which snapped  :sad1:)

Do you think it's a driveway job or could it be done with some axles and a basic set of spanners?

Snapped a bolt? You just don't know your own strength do you?! :jumping:

Thanks

It was seized, got 3 studs now holding my DP onto my turbo looool.
Unfortunately it's in the most ball-achey location so to re-stud it would require the turbo to be dropped. And can't be bothered the sake of one bolt (tis fine with 3 at the mo, new gasket and some paste) and unless I replace with a newer K03s or a k04 I'm just going to leave it.

But yes you can do it on a driveway if you had to. Pain in the arse because of working along the length of the car but it's honestly just a case of undoing some bolts

Mine passed mot no bother with downpipe decat, but about 6 months later I started getting the emissions light on, I fitted the extended elbow to the second cat sensor and no longer get the light. The first cat is for cold starting so is not part of the mot

Oh wow - I thought a decat meant definite MOT emissions failure!!

Is the GTi engine really that environmentally friendly?

Mine passed earlier this month with a decat, that was because I am friends with te mot tester... And it's local to Basingstoke as I am in Andover. Surprisingly mine was only just over the emissions limit with the decat fitted.
