I had my CC fitted by vrStu. I tried it out immediately and was in second gear. I've set the speed by using either the + or the - button (both work well) and pressing it for about two seconds. Gear is irrelevant. Like others have said, make sure it's activated by making sure the flip switch is flipped to the on position towards the left of the car.
