What does the Winter tyres setting in the mfd do? you can adjust the mph part but whats that all about??

Yeah I was wondering about this the other day when I was playing with the MFD, anybody know?? 

Yeah, all that is is the ability to set a speed limiter 'beep' at any speed. It was designed, so that if you fitted winter tyres that were only capable of a lower max speed, you could set the 'beep' to remind you. I use it to remind myself when im going at silly speeds.

I thought I had kerbed both rims on the left hand side of my car because I was really close to the kerb going up a hill and I could hear some major scraping. I was not gonna stop though as I had a major queue of traffic behind me wondering what the nob in the white golf was doing! I quickly stopped at a layby and to my relief it was only the snow scraping against the rim. Phew!

And as someone said above, turning TC off when driving in the snow helps SO MUCH!! Wish I had found out earlier when I was stuck!!

well, other issue is 3 doors are 19k+ plus on autotrader, the only 5 door on there is 30k

Yeah well there is that I suppose. They will soon be coming down, I reckon you will be able to pick one up for 24-25k in a few months

I wondered when you might mention this Tom when I saw your Facebook status..   Close call by the sounds of it..  
I had a similar episode in my old CTR about 5 years ago. Was coming down a hill near me in the snow (as cars in front managed it fine, thought I would be ok   ). As I got halfway down (only travelling about 3mph) my car just started sliding and that was it, out of my hands. I was heading straight for the junction with the main road   and no matter what I did (including trying to mount the curb) it just slid. Ended up sliding sideways onto the main road and coming to a rest and thank fook that exact min there was no traffic.  
The car that was approaching further down the road must have wondered what the hell I was doing, as I ended up facing the wrong way on his side of the road..  

Biggest problem is, cars with wider wheels will always struggle as they have a lot wider surface area on the snow/ice. That's why old sheds with skinny wheels that cut through the snow better make you look like a right tit...

I drove yesterday on snow and ice, and it was fine, slide it around a bend for fun.

My misses 1.3 Ka made a fool out of my car this morning....it just went straight up the snowy/icy hill with no probs at all

I have Ultra Grip Performance 225/45 R17 on my GTI. No problems at all... We had 20cm of snow last week and was lot of fun
