Mapping - can anyone explain the different stages?
« on: November 24, 2013, 04:21:14 pm »
Hi there,

So I've done a lot of research Into the stage 1,2 and 3 available maps and what recommended hardware is needed BUT can anyone explain what the actually difference is that the tuner does for each map I.e why do they recommend each bit of hardware? There must be something in the software that dictates why it's stage 1,2 or 3..is it purely a boost increase and matching fuel which is why the HPFP is needed to cope with the demand of the extra boost?

Reason is...my plan is to get just a downpipe with sports cat and an ITG CAI..what map do I qualify for with let's say R-tech? Stage 1 or 2?

Sorry if that's confusing..just want to get my head around what the difference is in the mapping that gives it the stage names.

Thank you

Stage 1 is a remap
stage 2 is supporting mods, intake, exhaust, uprated intercooler etc
Stage 2+ is same as above with HPFP
Stage 3 is generally new turbo/injectors etc

What you want is stage 2...

With a decat and CAI at r-tech you'll be getting a stage 1.5 map, costs £350. Add a big arse cooler and its Stage 2.

REVO, APR etc will be Stage 2 with those mods without a bigger cooler, although it's recommended.

You can go stage 2 without an upgraded intercooler.

Ah okay..so am I right in thinking the different stages just denote what level hardware you have rather than the tuner actually doing anything different? Because it the great scheme of things tuning is tuning...the tuner has to do the same job whether it be stage 1 or 3 so why charge more for a higher stage? The tuner is doing the same job..so your getting charged more purely because your getting more power out of it? Sorry, I do realise I'm going a bit in depth but just curious...

Higher stage is more complicated to tune generally mappers spend longer on stage 2 and especially stage 3 cars.

Oh okay that makes a bit more sense then.

So with a 3" downpipe with 200 cell cat and ITG CAI I'm looking at around 300ish hp with a stage 1-2 R-tech TiV map?

Thanks

Pretty much, yes.

My Eddy with only a BCS Sport Powervalve TBE 200 cell cat and REVO CAI was given a nice (read usable) custom linear 331bhp 337ft lb map at R-Tech. It made higher figures but the clutch was on its way out so was brought back a wee bit.

A big Cooler really would help you.
