Which oil for a 55K Edition 30
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:29:41 am »
Hi

I have searched the forums but cannot find the answer I need.

I have been using up to now Castrol Edge Professional Longlife III 5w-30 but it is burning through my car fairly quickly.

A friend of mine said as the car gets older I should move to 10-40 but I really don't know enough about oils to know how right or wrong this is.

What oil do you all recommend and use?

Thanks

Mat

Need to define what 'fairly quickly' means, top the oil up to Max line and when it reaches the Min line find out how many miles you have driven in this period and report back.

5w30 will flow better than 10w40 when cold and 10w40 will be thicker when hot compared with 5w30 which might be advantageous if modified.

I tried 5w40 in my MK5 and it made a small difference to consumption possibly around 150mm difference over the same mileage as 5w30...so not a lot.

I usually use Edge 5w30, but last drop I put in some Quantum 5w30 -- I change my oil so frequently that I'm after a Fully Syn Oil that won't break the bank... Millers is double the price of Quantum.

How much is that in ml, otherwise it's a guess. Min to Max on the Dipstick is approx. 1 litre of oil.

For reference mine was 1 litre every 12-1300 miles and that was a PITA. VW states in the manual that consuming 1 litre in 600 miles is normal .

Worth noting you need more than 4Litres to change the oil... it's about 4.4L hence me buying Quantum over Edge (Edge comes in 4L tubs, Quantum 5L) leaving some for the boot top up bottle. :happy2:

Is Castrol Edge and Quantum Longlife 3 the same oil in a different can?

You should not use 10w ANYTHING because it will take longer (up to another 30 seconds when it's very very cold outside) for oil to fully circulate around the engine.
The best compromise would be 5w40 and this is what I used on my TDI and that had 110% more power than it left the factory with and was fine at 150k  :indifferent:

Incase it's not known XwYY

x is the cold weight
YY is the hot weight

(lower weight = thinner/lighter oil). An oil which is too heavy/thick cannot circulate properly especially in turbocharged engines this is of concern.

I use Mobil1 in mine for the moment. I might try that Millers powermax oil or whatever it was called that Alex recommended. But it's twice as much as normal oil. That being said, it's cheaper than a new engine.

I tend to think so.
