Wheel bearing replacement.
« on: November 24, 2013, 05:41:52 pm »
Hi,

The recent MOT has thrown up that the front offside wheel bearing needs replacing.

The VAG specialist has quoted £245 all in for a genuine wheel bearing and fitting at 2 hours labour. Labour is £57 an hour. So WB £131.

Now this sounded like a lot to me both for the part and billing for 2 hours work??

I have looked on a 'cheap and nasty' car web site and seen a bearing for approx £75.  Won't the VW wheel bearing be made by the same companies as the cheaper alternatives?

So, would you go for a cheaper alternative, saving approx £50, or would you opt for the genuine part??

Thanks.

I changed the front one on the wife's golf. brought baring from euro car parts as its complete with hub. Took around 2hrs and cost less then £100.

never had any issues since

If the box says FAG or SKF or as above the product could be OEM.

Some products offered are cheap and nasty - as above says Euro Car Parts are fair with there pricing but always check against TPS, as they offer deals which often match or better there competition!

As for fitting each jobs difficulty level is related to tools available and mechanical ability.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I'll check the part from Euro car parts and also try TPS as advised.

I can see from the image that it is the entire hub rather than pressing out the old bearing.

I will probably buy the part myself and get the garage to fit it. Unfortunately I don't really have the space or tools to do it myself.

Thanks.

I tend to use a local (very much trusted) non Vw specialists. Their labour rate is fair and I find that the Vw specialists don't tend to be a huge amount cheaper than Vw themselves.

Actually thinking about it I have taken so many of my Vw/Audis to them over the years they probably are a specialist!
