Noise when air con is on
« on: November 30, 2013, 02:51:44 pm »
Daft one this. But I noticed today a strange noise. If I have the engine running and fans to low with the air con off its fine. If I then turn on the air con I can hear what I would describe as a dry bearing noise from in the dash. I know you can hear the air con work as the engine tone changes and I hear the pump start to work. It's just this noise is new. Any suggestions welcome

If it sounds like Darth Vader breathing this would be my first thoughtS:-

Has it be recharged with gas lately, if not a recharge and replace the pressure (switch failure is common).

After that I would be looking at a compressor as they also have a history of failure around 70k mark.

Finally, it not uncommon for these faults not to show up when scanned with VCDS.

If you do a search for pressure switch or aircon you'll be able to find similar threads on this topic. :happy2:

Ok the air con did work in the summer. If the switch fails would it cause the noise as above. Otherwise I will have to wait for summer to discover if it works ok as I can tell the comp kicks in but as it's cold can't tell if it's gassed or not

The switch failing will cause the noise I mentioned, just before it looses all the gas - then the noise stops but the aircon won't work.

For 2005-08 Vehicle with aircon

Typically aircon service including regard £45.00

Switch part no - 1K0 959 126 E (G65) £60.77

Nice one. Will order switch now then re gas at some point as I understand it can be changed without a re gas. Cheers.

Darth Vader is exactly the description I used - and it was the pressure switch at fault.

Not got chance to do this yet. The noise has now stopped and now when I switch the air con on I can't hear the compressor kick in. I take it this will further diagnose the fault to be the switch.

That's how mine failed many months ago - new switch, re-gas and now all working as it should.
