Finding the right sub & amp

Hi everyone,

I'm treating myself to a new sub and amp, but like everything, there is way too much choice. My budget is no more than £250, I only need a sub and an amp; I'm getting the stealth box by visual ice to mount onto the side of my boot 

I have a few questions though.

1) If I am only using one sub, do I get a 2 channel amp or a mono amp? Or does it not matter?

2) What is the difference between a single 4ohm voice coil and a dual 4ohm voice coil that can be wired into 2 ohms or 8ohms?

3) Out of the following 2 subs and 2 amps, what would be the best to go for?

1) it doesnt matter, as long as you can use all channels on the amp to power the sub.

2) if the sub is the same, its only the voice coil configuration. If you already have an amp you can pick a suitable sub to get all power out of your amp by loading it correctly. If buying sub and amp, you can go with any combo.

3) i wouldnt go for a boss amp. Unless they have changed in the past years their not exactly good amps. Shallow filters, low power. I would pick a small d-class mono amp from alpine, pioneer, kenwood etc. They are not that much more expensive and usually meet and exceed the power ratings. Being d-class they are also not demanding for current. Just pick a sub with impedance that matches the maximum power output load on the amp and youre done.

Good call on the visual ice stealth box. I love mine with spl dynamics xtr 250d4 and alpine pdx1.1000. The sensitivity in small sealed box is quite low but after some level matching and equalizing its bloody great! Gets really loud, punchy and goes low.

Are you sure yours is 12"?

If so what mounting depth do you have and what's the internal volume of the box.

Volume @ 1.2 cu ft / adding wadding simulates a larger enclosure. Can also be reduced by adding bulk.

Thanks for all the input, along with your help and the friendly and fast responses from caraudiodirect, I am going with the following:

Going with this set up I am 100% sure it will be more than what I want, happy days

I would find a dual 2ohm woofer to go with that amp. Your not getting full power out of the amp with dual 4 coils. And since impedance in sealed box will be very high anyway, its really not a perfect match.

I'd get the JL audio stuff. Ignore the power, get the best your money allows.

I don't think there is a standard on how to calculate power from an amp nor what a sub will take, JL audio stuff always seems on the money where as a kenwood, Sony, etc amps never seem quite as effortless to produce the same tone.

Properly constructred box will yield impedance high above the nominal (resistance) rating of the subwoofer, especially with sealed box near the box resonance fq. So I just mean the amplifier would probably handle a nominal 0.5ohm load in that box just fine resulting in more power for the sub.

Sorry :) differences are not big anyway. Amp looks good. I would just pick a 2+2ohm sub and I dont like kicker woofers, because their L7 squares dont handle power well :) but just go with what you feel is best! Its not that serious :)

Yeah defiantly going to go with that amp! I'll have a look around for some 2+2ohm subs, if not I'll go with the kicke; 800rms just sounds too nice not to get Yeah the square ones to me look horrible! Good job the one I'm considering isn't square though

Oh yeah, just want to double check something before I order!

My wiring kit is a vibe 4 gauge kit, 2000w max.

The amp is 2400w, the sub is 1600w.
I'll be wiring the sub and amp at 2ohm, which means the amp is at a max of 1600w, with an RMS of 800w.

The wiring kit will be able to handle it, right? As the max is going to be 1600w, not 2400w.
