The end of tax disc's?
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:10:28 am »
George Osbourne is set to announce the end of the road for the paper tax disc's today,

I personally am gutted simply because I have just spent the grand sum of £1.50 on a new REVO tax disc holder,

About time tbh!

Saying that the DVLA still don't update police national computer with expiry dates.....and the anpr 'no tax' list doesn't work either!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/budget/10496457/Autumn-Statement-2013-Tax-discs-on-car-to-disappear.html

I bought some the other day too !

It states the movement of cars around the country will be monitored and those untaxed dealt with ! This will not work in rural areas of the country where there are no cameras , the police will have to actually check the number to find out if it is taxed or not ! So even more people will drive without taxing their cars as they do now ! This may seem like a good idea but i think it isn't . Tax discs are a clear indication to patroling polcie officers that if no disc is displayed there will be other issues with the car too . It is virtually certain if a car has no disc it has no insurance or mot . Now there is no visual check for those that enforce the law and this enforcing of the "taxing of cars law" will no longer be done . As an ex officer if you were not busy you could keep an eye out for cars with no tax disc and target those cars . Every time there was no tax displayed another offence more serious would be found , the person usually was let off the tax issue and dealt with for the more serious offence . Shows how little the Government know about what the Police actually do !

PUT THE TAX ON FUEL those that use their cars more would pay more , those that use less pay less THATS A FAIR WAY TO TAX especially if you have more than one car  :happy2:

It is about time, but surely all the online systems should be rock solid before making the move.

I got a £30 ticket for not displaying my tax disc a few years back (it had fallen into the footwell), showed the disc and what had happened to the copper, but he continued to write out the ticket! WTF!  A bit of discretion required surely.

Slightly O/T but anyone notice the details on the tax disc on that article?

Ferrari - 5474cc - 12m - £205?! We're paying more than a Ferrari!

The Ferrari Enzo was 200/250 odd for the year! Was all before tax was decided on by emissions!

Few police friends keep moaning abotu current systems! I don't think it'll improve anytime soon! The continuous insurance enforcement, whilst good in principle, actually pretty much does nothing to help the problem!

That ticket.....god!

Two issues:

1. Someone above mentioned people not displaying tax discs might have issues but I suspect more people just don't bother/forget to update their tax disc.

2. How dors this help when buying a used car? Will there be a 24 hr hotmine or online service for prospective buyers to check?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

You Can already check a cars tax on the internet. Google DVLA tax check. I've used it a few times and really useful.

Best part is the direct debits to pay monthly, for me at least kind of makes the £260 quid a year a bit less of an issue if you can spread it :driver:
