It was something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diagnostic-Scanner-CAN-Bus-Trouble-Diagnose/dp/B005FOIC3I/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1387813039&sr=8-6&keywords=vag+OBD2

There are other models from other manufacturers and suppliers. You can get bluetooth jobbies which when paired to a smartphone with software like TORQUE can do the same thing, I keep one in a cubbyhole just in case.

Either way many dislike them but they have worked for me.

Not trying to influence you but buying a genuine copy will give you the flexibility to diagnose your and others cars should other faults arise in the future and will always be updated for the vag group of cars as I see it to me it is more of an investment which in theory will last a lifetime. Had mine 6 months and diagnosis on my car alone it paid for itself ,like I said not trying to influence you  :P
