Hit a post with my GTI :( Cost of repair?
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:47:45 pm »
Don't ask how, but I've managed to scrape/hit against a post near my house... My poor GTI has come away quite badly :(

I need to replace the left front wing and entire front bumper.  Everything else is fine.  Initially the left wheel couldn't turn because the wheel arch had crumpled, but I've managed to sort that out, now need to replace the damages.

Will probably take to a garage,  but seen as all my locals are closed until after Xmas,  anyone care to estimate a fix cost?

Had a look,  can also buy front bumpers too.... I'm sure it would save me tons of cash,  but I'm clueless on how to fit.  So I'll end up taking to garage.

I was hoping repair cost would be under a grand, and judging by those part costs hopefully it will be  :happy2:

Paint is horrendous price now , don't skimp on quality as you'll see it every time you go near the car . Has the wing being pushed back caused any door damage or A pillar problem ?

At least £1000 done properly ?? My sons car was damaged recently , front n/s wing not as bad as that and no bumper damage but f/n/s door skin and rear n/s door skin and the bill was £4600 , but that was on Insurance . The paint alone cost over £500 according to the invoice .

If you're paying a grand to do that on an 8 year old hatchback you need your head checking, if someone is paying £4.6k then a lobotomy is the only answer.  Price of paint sounds like classic bodyshop B$ to me.

I take it your a women?

No need for that! We are old enough on here to avoid sexism, even in joke form!

I think if anyone is offended (women) they are able to speak up for themselves lol.
If you can't have a joke in life because you're PC then hey so be it!!

From looking at the pictures..
You would need new wing, blending onto the door, new bumper, new fog light, new fog light grill, associated clips, new splitter, probably a few little bits of wiring etc, new headlight if there's any damage on that. Also would imagine you'd need a new air temp sensor (for the dash readout) but maybe got away with that one?!

Presume the crash bar isn't bent/damaged and no other damaged parts.. best bet is to whip bumper off to check!

Prices depend on your location and what not... always get a bit irate at people asking how much it is to spray when we're not spray painters in your area!!!
I had half my old car resprayed for £450. Yet I know in some parts in London that would barely get you one panel done for that!
You need to ask a bodyshop in your area for an accurate quote..

RE Insurance bodyshop repairs .... agree they cost a fortune, that's how the majority of bodyshops make their money through insurance work. - By charging extortionate amounts of money!!! 500 quid in paint? You need like 3-4 litres to do a FULL respray (I'm talking colour change or from a bare metal chassis). Same colour blow over sort of work is much less.

1 US quart is  0.96L am I right? The house of kolor paint I use on my wheels is £50 per quart. That is a pretty special colour plus house of kolor scene tax. So it would cost me let's say at worst £300 for paint to do a car... normal paint would be less..  OK plus the lacquers and thinners and what not but still. £500 for a few panels is a far reach.

No wonder our insurance prices are so high!  :signLOL: :signLOL:
How on earth did you manage to do that though?!?!

Gutted for you  :sad1: on the other hand I did have a little laugh when I saw the scrape/hit comment then saw the picture  that's tried to rip the wing off!! Would be very surprised if the headlight mounts haven't being snapped off. Have you no friends that could this as a govey? You just get the parts and they fit?

Jay your hok paint is fairly cheap bud.

We use DuPont

Average tinte r price is about 150 per litre. The binders are over 200 a tub and the xirrilic pearls are 250 for half a litre. Your laqcuers are close to 350 a gallon.

I'm sick of saying it but ins quotes are done through a recognized system with tines derived from thatchem, the same people who grade the alarms. Sad to say but the Times they quote are accurate, just the fact Joe public would never pay them so we have to loose some of the time and profit.

Paint prices are worked out on an index of panel coverage.

Like anything you can buy cheap paint. But I wouldn't use it for anything. Is crap.

The above repair your looking at roughly £220 paint and materials around £130 Labour and then the parts on top.

Oe parts are best but expensive, non gen can be ok as long ad there thatchem approved , used parts will be cheapest but bare in mind you'll pay a bit more due to them having stone chips or dents that may need doing.

I wouldn't consider myself particularly PC, but that hasn't got anything I do with being PC; it wasn't written in a jokey form, with any humour linked to it, nor did it follow up with any query about the car so was just a sexist statement.

Anyway, back to the poor lad and his car, definitely more a wack than a scrap  :signLOL:, only way to keep parts down is like others have said, second hand pre-paired parts would be the best bet
