Factory fitted MFD2 CD Nav to RNS510 - which/how?
« on: December 24, 2013, 06:56:29 pm »
Hi All

After a trip up to Scotland in our new(ish) GTI we've decided that the MFD2 CD satnav unit has to go and be replaced with a RNS510 with 7 digit postcodes and decent maps and TMC.

Our car is an 05 plate AXX (so early car).

I see plenty of RNS510s come up for sale on here but I've no idea what version/revision I'm looking for or what firmware it needs to be running to work correctly in my car.

Can anyone tell me what I need?!

Will the new unit need to be coded to my car as I've already got NAV / highlight dash etc?

Do I need to get an ebay nav antenna for the RNS510 because I already have factory nav?

I have read about battery drain issues too - how are these avoided?

Thanks

You will need a new canbus gateway if installing a rns510 to avoid battery drain. PM Eddie-NL for the best price.

As for coding you'll probably only need it if you have the optional VW soundpack installed with the amp under the passenger seat.

pretty sure there isn't a soundpack under the seat in my car, I think it just has the standard 10 speaker setup, OEM etc.

Should be plug and play replacement then aside from the updated Gateway.

You'll need a dual fakra adapter too.

But should be plug and play (+gateway upgrade)

I did it on mine a few months back

Nice one, that's helpful.

Any thoughts on software versions / firmware etc? I've seen a few units for sale on eBay that claim to have a software version that stops the battery drain problem, presumably meaning you don't need to change the can gateway?? Is this just BS or is it right?

There is a firmware hack out there to stop the battery drain issue but IMO it better to do the job properly by the updating the gateway and use the latest firmware that your unit will work with.

AXX engine code - you may also have the diversity antenna under the driver's seat. Disconnect the FAKRA connectors from the diversity antenna box and make a straight pass-through for both of them. This means that the RNS will be able to use both antennae (in my instance, this enabled the traffic information function which was previously unavailable).
